Inspired by the Dead

Spooky never tasted so scrumptious.

That’s the lesson my second grader has learned by watching Food Network’s seasonal hit “Halloween Wars.” The four-episode series wraps up this Sunday and my daughter is all a twitter wondering which team will come out on top. Teams consist of pumpkin carvers, candy makers and cake designers working together to create elaborately bizarre Halloween themed displays.

Interestingly, the show has turned by Halloween scaredy cat into a risk taker in the kitchen. She is dead-set on creating her own freaky Halloween dessert. The problem is I don’t have near the skills as the pros on Food Network. Still, I am determined to make an attempt at ghoulish goodies a fun experience for my girl, so we’ve decided to make a Graveyard Cake to take to a Halloween potluck we’re attending next Friday.

The recipe is about as easy as it gets. All you need to do is bake an 11 by 13-inch rectangular cake, and then let your imagination run wild by decorating the top to mimic a cemetery. I am planning to frost the cake with buttercream, and then letting my daughter do the decorating.

Hobby Lobby has a ton of seasonal cake decorating supplies that are perfect to make eye-popping embellishments on a Halloween-themed cake. I got edible glitter to place on chocolate bats, though you could substitute with edible paint or luster dust too. I also purchased gel food coloring for tinting the white buttercream which we will use to pipe on different areas of the cake.

Some other ghastly goodies that will top our Graveyard Cake include cookies for headstones, crushed Oreos to mimic dirt, Peeps marshmallow ghosts and black cats, candy corn to create angry eyes on the trunk of a leafless tree (the tree will be made from modeling chocolate), spun sugar to use as spider webs and pull-and-peel licorice for trails of blood.
