Who will win the Super Bowl? Insurance Journal asked that question on January 31, 2013, to a group of insurance professionals. Many people who work in the insurance industry tend to have experience in calculating risk. Which team do you think they picked?
Will you be watching the Super Bowl this year? Which team do you hope will win, the 49ers, or the Ravens? If one of them happens to be your favorite team, then you will find that question to be extremely easy to answer. The question will not be difficult to answer if you happen to strongly dislike one of those teams – just pick the “other guys”.
In general, people tend to want the team that they favor to win. It is based upon little more than personal preference for one team over the other.
Insurance professionals, on the other hand, make their living by predicting risk and paying out losses. The Insurance Journal Academy of Insurance wondered which team insurance experts figured would win the Super Bowl. A poll was taken on January 31, 2013. At the time I am writing this blog, it appears that people can still take the poll.
One way to look at data from any poll is to take all of the answers, “crunch the numbers” and see which of the two options was the most selected. In this poll, a total of 62% of insurance professionals picked the San Francisco 49ers to win Super Bowl XLVII. That means that only 38% of the insurance professionals picked the Baltimore Ravens as the winner.
If you want to see the percentage of insurance professionals that picked the 49ers, and the percentage that picked the Ravens, based upon the job function of the professionals who took the poll, you can. Insurance Journal has an easy to read chart that lists it all for you. For the purposes of this blog, I will just point out a few stats that caught my attention.

* Agency Owners 72%
* Sales professionals 70%
* Claims workers 64%
* Underwriters 56%
* A total of 78% of the insurance executives who took the poll, and who lived in California, favored the 49ers.
Who favored the Ravens over the 49ers?
* Insurance CEOs and Chairmen 57%
* Marketing and Advertising workers 56%
* 100% of the insurance professionals who took the poll, and who lived in Maryland, favored the Ravens.
