Intuitive Students and the Classroom

Opposite to the personality of sensing people are intuitive people. While sensing students enjoy learning facts, intuitive students enjoy taking facts and manipulating them to see how they relate with one another.

Intuitive students had rather think about things than do them. They want to understand how things work and find the theories behind ideas. Their focus lies mainly in the future.

In a sense, intuitive students will work backwards. They solve the problem then go back to decide which facts are significant and which are not. They want to quickly get to the solving part without investigating all of the details. In many cases, intuitive persons will jump to answering without hearing or reading the entire question. In some incidents, they miss key pieces and facts.

These students want to get started right in on writing a paper or completing a project without having a plan or an outline.

The students with the intuitive personality type may find themselves bored with drill and practice measures. Once they understand how to subtract two digit numbers, they find it useless to complete twenty more problems for practice.

If the class or lesson seems to go too slow and not move at a face enough pace, intuitive students can become frustrated. An intuitive student is known to jump ahead and actually predict what a person or story is going to say. These predications can sometimes be wrong. An intuitive person can make themselves believe that they heard or read something in a different way than it was actually presented.

A child with an intuitive personality will do best in a classroom that allows for flexibility and independent work. These students need a less structured environment with a teacher that is not “set in his or her ways”. Intuitive students want to know that they have a choice in how to carry out tasks and that they are not limited in thinking. These students do well with independent learning in which they can self-discover instead of being told new learning information. They work well in a group or by themselves.
