How do you know if working from home is right for you? It’s important to know this before you take the plunge.
First, consider if something you do as a hobby could be turned into a home business. There are so many ways this can be done.
Maybe you can make a killer cheesecake. Or you know how to design some really cool jewelry. It could be that you are great at organizing.
Virtually anything we enjoy as a hobby could potentially be turned into a business. Think outside the box. This may be the first step in deciding if working from home is right for you.
Another consideration is money. Will working from home save you money? For instance, it could save on the cost of childcare. There are other things you can factor in saving on such as work clothes, lunch, gas, etc.
If you have children at home, it may seem like a no-brainer that working from home would be best. But this isn’t necessarily true. It will depend on the type of business you are running and the age/needs of your children.
For instance, it might be difficult to have a successful writing career with children under the age of five. But you might fare better with a baking business. It’s important to consider how well your family and home business will mesh and if you can be productive in your work.
You should also take into consideration freelance work. While it can be great, if you don’t have something already lined up, it may not be a good idea to quit your other job just yet.
You also have to look to the future. Will you be able to rely on continuous work or is there a chance that nothing more will come your way?
One thing you might not have considered is whether your personality fits with working from home. It requires someone who is self-motivated, a bit of a risk taker, focused, disciplined and passionate about their work.
Because the truth is that some people need a boss. They need someone who can remind them of what is expected or give them deadlines. When you work from home, it’s all on your shoulders.
Do you have a room or a spot in your home where you can do your work? Or will you be sharing space with noisy children? It’s important to have an area that you can use strictly for your business.
Finally, are you able to withstand the temptations that will come your way when working from home? It becomes much easier to get wrapped up in things other than your work such as social media.
Deciding to work from home is a huge decision to make. You should think through it carefully before diving in.
