Is Your Job Making You Sick?

Each home – based professional has his or her own reasons why working from home is right for them. Today, I am going to look at how working at home can help people that have one specific reason that they need to leave their office job as soon as possible. While many people may say that they are sick of their job, there are other people that suffer from actual physical or mental illness as a result of their job.

Some people are very sensitive to pollutants and toxins in the environment. It does not take much to make them feel terrible. For one person, the chemical solution that the janitors use to clean the carpets once a week could give them terrible migraines that prevent them from working. Another person may be sensitive to dust and or mold and the heating and cooling systems in the office building where they work could be ineffective at keeping the workplace air clean and healthy. That person may constantly feel uncomfortable because of congestion and watery eyes and they may need to take allergy medication every day just to make being at work bearable.

There are also many emotional factors that can impact the health of employees within a workplace. I felt this one day last week, at the workplace where I work one or two shifts each week. From the moment I walked in the door to the moment that I ran out the door after my shift, I felt as if my soul was being crushed. It is important to note that the feeling was not due to any interpersonal conflict or tension with co-workers, in fact I like the people that work there. It was due to other factors that have contributed to my decision to leave that job by the end of the month and become completely self-employed at my two home-based businesses. These factors include the fact that there was no room for me to grow there, no meaningful way for my talents and abilities to be put to use, and no real challenge or goal to work for. These things are real things that affect the day to day emotional health of employees at workplaces around the world. If they are severe enough and an employee feels powerless to make any changes, they can become depressed and exhibit physical and mental symptoms of clinical depression.

How can home-based work help people that are not just sick of work but are actually sick at work? By working from home, you can regain control of the things in your workplace that make you ill. If a chemical-free environment is what you need, chances are that you have already eliminated all of the toxins and chemicals from your home that make you feel terrible. Working in the safe place that you have created for yourself can enable you to feel well again so that you can work. The same goes for allergens, you can make many changes to your home environment that would be difficult if not impossible to make in an office building. By choosing the type of home-based career that you get into, you can take back your power and select work that uses your skills and challenges you to keep learning and growing. Home-based work is right for many people for many reasons. If your workplace is making you mentally or physically ill, you may want to think about making the switch to working at home so that you can enjoy better health while making a living.
