It’s Griling Time: Fruit

Grilling time is one of the best times of year! We know all about grilling veggies, burgers, steaks, fish, and chicken but what about fruit? Have you grilled fruit before? Fruit is great for grilling since it is mostly water and sugar. Once grilled it concentrates and it becomes super sweet and delicious. Soak fruit in very cold water before grilling to maximize the water it holds so it stays juicy and sweet.

The best fruit to grill are apples, pineapples, and pears due to being firm in nature. Softer fruit such as peaches, plums and mangoes need to be watched carefully. Bananas can be kept in the skin to retain their shape while citrus fruit needs to be sliced.

If you are making kabobs then be aware of the types of fruit you are pairing together. If you put a firm fruit with a mushy fruit the cook time will be different for each fruit. You will end up with a half grilled apple or an over grilled banana or mango. Make tropical fruit kabobs or apple and pear kabobs for even grilling. Try mixing up some veggies with firmer fruit for an interesting kabob. If you want to add meat to your kabob then use firm fruit to avoid the fruit cooking too fast.

Make sure you grill on medium heat and do not walk away or get distracted. If you cook on a charcoal grill then make sure the fruit is off the flame or wrapped in foil. I have a bad tendency to walk away and forget about delicate items on the grill. I must prefer my husband to take the reigns on grilling anyway.

When making a foil wrap for your grilled creation try pairing up veggies and fruit, a salsa, or fruit and fish. Get creative and you will find grilling to be so much fun!
