Jim Nabors Marries in Seattle

As you know, same-sex marriage has been in the news – A LOT!  Gays are still fighting to be like regular couples while many heterosexuals feel that marriage should be reserved for males and females.

Some oppose homosexuality because they say that lifestyle is more promiscuous than heterosexuality.  I beg to differ and here is a prime example.

This image is a work of a U.S. military or Department of Defense employee, taken or made as part of that person’s official duties. As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image is in the public domain.

On January 15th, actor/singer Jim Nabors, best known for played the television character “Gomer Pyle,” left his home in Hawaii to travel to Seattle, but he didn’t travel alone.  No, Nabors took Stan Cadwallader with him.  Cadwallader has been Nabor’s partner for the last 38 years.  The two traveled briefly to Seattle to be married.  Last December, Washington’s same-sex marriage bill took effect.

I think that Nabors homosexuality was one of the least best kept secrets in Hollywood.  Gay rumors swirled around Nabors for years, but like Anderson Cooper, Nabors kept his personal life just that – personal.  With heterosexuals like Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift constantly all up in the news with their latest romances, I have to respect people like Nabors and Cooper.

But, why marry now, after 38 years?  Nabors said they felt the need to solidify it since they had been together for so long. Nabors said, “I’m 82 and he’s in his 60s and so we’ve been together for 38 years and I’m not ashamed of people knowing, it’s just that it was such a personal thing, I didn’t tell anybody.”  Actually, Nabors said that co-workers and friends knew, but he meant he just never told the media.

For any naysayers, Nabors added, “I’m very happy that I’ve had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed. And, what can I tell you, I’m just very happy.”  The couple met in 1975 when Cadwallader was a Honolulu firefighter.

Now I am sure, as with all relationships, the entire 38 years wasn’t just blissful and immune to turmoil, but how can you argue with a couple that has stuck it out for 38 years.  And, how sad is it our society chose to make Nabors wait until his golden years to be able to have an official union with the person he loves?
