June 2008 Preparedness Goals

For June’s preparedness goals, we are going to focus on what you need to store. This is really just getting a plan together. You will store different things then I store. Each situation is unique. You should put together an overall plan, but I a going to divide it into three sets of questions you should ask yourself, and then give you a challenge on what you should purchase this month.

1) First think of your three month food supply. The church counsels us to store three months of food that we eat on a regular basis. This food should be rotated. One easy way to do this is take your normal monthly menu (if you have one) and then multiply by three. Then you need to write a grocery list for your menus and begin purchasing food. You can do this by watching for sales and then stocking up on items you need planning for three months of food.

2) Think of your long term food storage. This is the year supply. We are counseled to begin with the basics of wheat, beans, sugar and oil. You can find the church’s list here. There is also a handy calculator that will let you know how much you will need of each item for the size of your family. Next think of foods that you need to add, such as vegetables and seeds for a vegetable garden. You can also add meat to your food storage. You may also consider adding comfort foods to your food storage. Begin by purchasing with the basics and supplementing it as you can.

3) Think of things that you will need outside of your food storage. If you store a lot of wheat you may want a wheat grinder. You may also want to think about storing clothing or fuel. Toiletry items and cleaners are nice to have on hand as well. Look at what you normally buy in a month, and begin buying more than you need each month. You’ll build up a stockpile quickly. The deal’s board has great suggestion on how to do this easily.

4) Your challenge is to begin building your food storage. You should make out a list and begin working on it today. You may decide to buy one thing from each of three categories each month, or you may set aside a certain amount each month to go towards the best deals.
