Keeping the Paper Piles at Bay

If you have a home office you likely have a paper issue. Paper piles can abound. They seem to grow almost overnight. So if you are ready to tackle those paper piles, here are some ideas.

Invest in a bulletin board. A bulletin board is a great place to stick notes on. Instead of having sticky notes all over you can keep everything in one place. You can tack on reminders, to do lists, or passwords.

Binders are another way to keep papers organized. Binders can organize school papers, receipts, bills or even CDs. Clear page protectors are a great way to protect papers.

I personally prefer organizing most of my papers in file folders. I have a file folder for virtually everything. I have a file folder for important documents like social security cards and birth certificates. I have folders for activities that my children are involved in like football and Civil Air Patrol. I have folders for medical information, like the orthodontist.

I also keep blank file folders handy so when a new category comes up, I can quickly label the folder and stick it in my file folder drawer.

One of the keys to keeping a handle on paper piles, however, is to immediately do something with the paper. Too often we take a piece of paper and we set it down, intent on doing something about it later on. Suddenly we are putting down another piece of paper and then another. Pretty soon
you are overrun.

To tackle this, every time you find yourself with a piece of paper resolve to do one of three things: 1) take action, 2) file it, or 3) toss it. What I mean by take action is sometimes the paper requires we do something, such as make a phone call or fill in the calendar. If you take action immediately then you likely will be able to then toss the paper.

Try these ideas if you want to keep your paper piles at bay.
