Last-Minute St. Patrick’s Day Family Fun

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner.  Whether you are full, half or just a wee bit Irish, there’s always fun to be had on March 17th.  Luckily, you don’t have to find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow in order to afford the St. Patrick’s Day treats listed below.  All you need are a few pint-sized wannabe leprechauns and some inexpensive materials to go green this holiday weekend.

No-Sew Clover Bookend:  Simply take some green felt and cut-out the shape of a four-leaf clover.   Next, take some stitch tape. This tape is used when you don’t want to haul out your sewing machine.  Stitch tape works much like fusible interfacing. Just place it in between two folded-over raw edges of the green felt clovers, and then seal it with a hot iron. The stitch tape will adhere to both pieces of the felt, creating a seam.  You need to leave a small opening in the clover, so you can stuff it with dried beans or wood chips.  Once you’ve filled the felt clover, add more stitch tape to seal the small opening.  Your stuffed clover bookend can be placed on a shelf as decoration or you can glue it to a wooden block and add a special St. Patrick’s Day message.

Leprechaun Plate:  Give your child a large paper plate and have him paint the entire outer rim with orange paint.  This will be the leprechaun’s hair and beard.  Place the plate on the side to dry.  Meanwhile, draw a tall hat on some construction paper and cut-out.  When the paint is thoroughly dry, have your child draw the leprechaun’s eyes, nose, and mouth with crayons or markers.  Next, have your child make small cuts with a scissors all around the plate.  This will make the orange painted areas appear more hair-like.  Glue on the hat and display.
