Last Minute Travel Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

Forget about the sirloin steak dinner and singing greeting card. Ditch your desire to shower her with coffee mugs and candy. According to a recent online poll, what most moms want this Mother’s Day is a relaxing trip to a far off destination (supposedly far, far away from that sink full of dirty dishes and the piles of soiled laundry overflowing from the bathroom hamper). Personally, I would settle for a day off from kitchen duties.

So the verdict is in: moms the world over are looking for adventure on the high seas, excitement in the air, and fun in the sun. If you are still looking for the perfect gift to bestow the woman who sacrificed her life to ensure yours was a bit more pleasant might I recommend the following travel ideas:

MOTHERLAND. Give mom a trip she won’t soon forget—-a plane ticket to the land of her ancestors. Be it Germany, France, Japan, China or Italy, the trip will likely be the most profound she has ever taken.

ADVENTURE. Give mom the chance to stroll through an ancient castle or become a surf diva at a women-only surf camp. The latter will have your beloved mom jetting off to the sandy beaches of Maui, Mexico, San Diego or Costa Rica. Or give mom the chance to explore life under the sea with a snorkeling adventure in the Caribbean.

GREEN. If your mom worries more about Mother Earth than she does Father Time then send her off on a multi-week “green getaway.” The “vacations with a conscience” are gaining in popularity and give guests the chance to use their talents to make the world a better place. For example, Idealist.org will design a volunteer vacation specifically for your mom. So, say she loves kids and enjoys spending time in the great outdoors—-the company will send her to an orphanage in Nepal that provides a few days of safari to people willing to help out with the kids from anywhere from two weeks to four months.

THEME. If your mom loves to cook (or just loves to eat) consider sending her on a culinary tour of Italy. If exercise is more her thing consider signing her up for a trip to India where she will participate in unique yoga classes designed to renew both body and spirit. If you are looking for the ideal gift for a new mom check out the weekend packages at the Breakers in Palm Beach. They hotel will baby-proof her room and even provide an experienced babysitter so mom can escape to the spa, pool or the bedroom to catch some well deserved zzzzz’s.
