What if Your Home was in a War Zone?

My thoughts and prayers go out to every person trying to survive in a war torn country. I don’t want to go into too much detail, but the turmoil throughout the world today is so intense that hearing about each conflict, each outbreak of violence, is heartbreaking. I have very strong opinions about politics, foreign policy, the UN, and the various conflicts, but my biggest concern is for the people caught up in all of it. It breaks my heart to watch news footage and observe all the human suffering. People are people no matter where they live, no matter … Continue reading

Focusing on Christmas

As the Christmas season approaches it is important to take time now to prepare for the spiritual side of the season. While everyone enjoys the lights, the hustle and bustle of the holiday and the gift giving, it is too easy to lose the true meaning of Christmas. Taking time to formulate a plan to celebrate and remember the true meaning of Christmas can really help the season to come alive. One way that you can do this is by making time to serve someone during the Christmas season. Growing up my family always did the Twelve Days of Christmas … Continue reading

Heaven Scent – Rebecca Cornish Talley

“Heaven Scent” is the first novel by LDS author Rebecca Cornish Talley. We meet Liza Compton, a girl in her senior year of high school at a new school. Her father recently landed a job in a prestigious law firm and uprooted the family to a new area, believing that a big house and great cars would be the answer to their dreams. Instead, he spends more and more time at work and away from his family, and Liza wishes things could go back to the way they were before. Sure, they didn’t have much money, but they had their … Continue reading

RS/EQ: God, the Eternal Father

The second lesson in the Joseph Smith manual for this year’s course of study is entitled “God, the Eternal Father.” We begin by looking at Joseph’s upbringing. His parents were deeply spiritual and the Bible was read regularly by everyone within the household. Joseph had knowledge of the basic character of God from his earliest years. He was accustomed to family prayers and to calling upon the name of God in thanksgiving and for mercy. When it came time for him to pray and to receive the First Vision, prayer was not unfamiliar to him. Joseph Smith taught that God … Continue reading

Star Shining Brightly – Marcia Mickelson

After reading LDS author Marcia Mickelson’s book “Reasonable Doubt,” I was curious to read her first novel, which was “Star Shining Brightly.” Having read both of them, I’m not sure which I liked best—they’re different enough that they don’t necessarily compete with each other. “Reasonable Doubt” is a law mystery, while “Star Shining Brightly” takes us to the world of Hollywood. Superstar Lauren Olsen was raised in a Mormon home but abandoned her upbringing when she came to Hollywood. She drinks, she’s had a string of boyfriends, and she’s starred in some movies that were violent or sexual. She has … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: A Light to Darkness

As I prepare for Sunday’s classes, I try to break each lesson down into smaller parts and study it throughout the week. This helps me to ponder the various parts of each lesson more fully, and to do more in-depth study of each section. It also makes the larger parts easier to handle. The first two scriptures I found in the first Sunday School lesson of the new year gives me an overview of Christ’s life and mission. What a way to start the new year and a new way to study! Isaiah 61:1-3 was a quote that Christ actually … Continue reading

Washington Island–A Floating Gem

Do you love the outdoors? Does the idea of an island adventure sound inviting? If you answered “yes,” then I have a suggestion for a fabulous day trip. (No, this not another blog about Hawaii.) Believe it or not, this island is floating in the waters of Lake Michigan and is considered a nature lover’s paradise. Washington Island, Wisconsin is located approximately 7 miles off the tip of the Door County Peninsula. The waters of Green Bay hug the Western shores and the waters of Lake Michigan the Eastern shores. You (and your vehicle) will need to board a ferry … Continue reading
