Lead Your Family

As parents it is important that you lead your family. There are several different areas in which you should lead your family by example. As your children see your example, they will learn how to form good habits, and they will see how the gospel has blessed your life. If you are frustrated with a certain aspect of your family life, then you need to see what you can do to change the situation. You may be surprised to realize that the change needs to begin within yourself.

1) One important area in which you should lead your family is with gospel study and prayer. This can be done by personally studying the scriptures and having personal prayer. You can do this quietly, in your room, because if it is truly a habit your children will observe you doing it on a regular basis. You can also lead in this area by having family prayer, family home evening and family scripture study on a regular basis. This will encourage your children to do the same things.

2) Another important area to lead is in the respect that is in your home. When you treat your children with respect, they are much more likely to treat you and other family members with respect. This is not to say that your teenager will not mouth off or say negative things about you or the family, but underneath that she will know the proper way to treat someone. This should start with the tone of voice and the words that you use with those around you. You can lead by not allowing other people in your family demean each other as well.

3) Another important area in which to lead your family is responsibility and work ethic. If you value the importance of hard work and doing your best, it will greatly benefit your children. You can lead in this area by working hard at your job and the chores that you have around the house. You can also lead by expecting your children to help around the house. By working alongside your children you are helping them to become successful adults.
