Learning new ways to eat

When I was pregnant with twins, I experienced my first Gall Bladder attack. I must say, it was very painful. The bigger my twins grew, the less I could eat. I had to start eliminating certain foods from my diet. I ended up with a very bland diet. I first eliminated the fat in my diet. I was assigned to a Dietician who tried to help me. But as the babies grew, nothing I tried worked except for a simple diet that included oatmeal, rice and toast. I learned to be creative with oatmeal. I was able to add just about any spice or seasoning that I wanted without any problems.

After my twins were born, I was able to go back to a regular diet. I didn’t have my Gall Bladder removed and sometimes it flares up and I have to go back to a bland diet for a while. Today was one of those days. Again, I just need to be creative. Now, I can have a little more on my menu besides the oatmeal, rice and toast. But it needs to be bland. When my children were sick one time, my Pediatrician said to put my child on the BRAT diet. BRAT stands for Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. These foods contain low fat and they are great to have on hand.

I found that these foods are great to help your diet as well. When you need a snack, these are good to have. Applesauce contains 0 fats, Rice contains 0 fats, and bananas contain 0 fats as well. One slice of regular white bread contains 1 gram of fat. While I was pregnant, I lost 50 pounds. I have gained it back over the last 20 months, but this year I hope to lose it for the last time.

Here are some tips and hints to try to help your diet.

* Bouillon cubes have five calories but no fat. Use them to boil your rice in instead of plain water. You get the flavor of the bouillon cube with every bite.
* Use herbs or seasonings instead of a lot of butter or margarine. It’s healthier and it makes the food taste great.
* Add cinnamon or allspice to your applesauce to give it flavor. You can use fresh apples instead of a jar of applesauce if you have them. Just peel, core and place the apples into a kettle. Add a little water to keep them from sticking. Bring them to a slow boil and smash them with a potato masher. You can leave it chunky or you can make it thin.
* Salads are great for diets too. But don’t just stop at vegetables, add a little chicken, pepperoni, bacon, or what ever you had for dinner last night.
