One thing I like to do every year is challenge myself to coming up with something a little bit different to do for Valentine’s Day. We can always give Valentine’s Cards and candies and flowers or new cufflinks or a tie or even a fun pair of boxer shorts. But what if the Valentine’s Day gift you want to give is one you can’t buy, but instead is one you can create.
Storybook Story
Do you have a favorite romantic fairytale? If you were to look at the various romantic fairy tales out there – which one would be most like you and your husband? I have my favorites and then I have the ones that I associate most with my relationship – they are not always the same.
But let’s say your fairy tale is the Princess Bride – the young man who left home and made something of himself and came back to you. That may sound a little out there, but I know a couple of women who would associate their relationship with the story told in the Princess Bride – including the secrets and not understanding everything the man they fell in love with when they were younger went through to become the man he is.
Create Your Own Fairytale
This may take a little bit of time, but head out to the bookstore and find a copy of your favorite fairy tale. Now, you can do one of three things:
- Add Notations – Throughout the book sprinkle notations where you praise your spouse and illustrate their positive qualities and what you most associate about your relationship and the fairytale
- Scan the Pages in to a Computer – And use a little creativity in a word program to change the names – inserting yours and your spouse’s. Then use a color printer to print it out and bind it together for a gift
- Write your own fairy tale – Use the book layout as your model and then use pictures of the two of you and your relationship – right up to the wedding pictures for the happily ever after as your illustrations
Create your own storybook story – it’s a Valentine’s Day Gift the two of you will treasure for a long time to come.
Have you ever done something like this for your spouse?
