Mad Money (2008)

Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah and Katie Holmes star as three federal reserve employees who get away with the impossible: they steal hundreds of thousands of dollars over the course of three years from the Federal reserve.

The Plot Thins

Bridget Cardigan (Diane Keaton) is the typical rich housewife/socialite married to the typical self absorbed husband who has lost his job. He sits around and becomes depressed. . .in exactly the way that you might think someone that self absorbed would do. Bridget is the mastermind behind the heist with the mantra, “Crime is contagious.”

Nina Brewster played by Queen Latifiah, is a single mother and unsurprisingly gets involved ‘on behalf’ of her boys. She doesn’t want the boys getting in trouble in their inner city neighborhood so she figures with the stolen money she could pay tuition for them to go to a private school.

And finally there’s Jackie Truman, played by Katie Holmes. She’s a little quirky and while she doesn’t have a particular reason for getting involved, in my opinion she was the bright spot in the movie.

The problem is that there’s little to this movie. The plot is predictable and while I liked Katie Holmes’ character–I thought the others were unremarkable. It’s not the worst movie I’ve ever seen, but I didn’t love it either.

Content Warnings

There is a fair amount of mild cursing in this movie. There are numerous sexual inuendos. However, compared to other movies, it is mild and may not bother you like it did me. You could sit down with your teen and watch it. . .but I cannot figure out why you’d want to.
