Make Sleepover Gear

Maybe boys don’t call them slumber parties, and maybe girls don’t really use that term much any more either. It doesn’t really matter which term you prefer, slumber party, sleepover, or what have you. If you’re going to such a party, you’ll need something to carry your stuff and you are going to need a pillow.

Here are two great ways to make sleepover bags and matching pillows:

No Sew Fringe Fleece Bag and Pillow

Cut two rectangular shaped pieces of fleece the same size, about 20” wide by 24” long. Lay the two pieces together, face side out. Along both sides and one end, cut strips about 1” wide and 2” long. Grasp each strip, which will have two layers, and tie them together in a simple knot. Continue doing this around all three sides. You will have a fringed fleece bag with no sewing in just a few minutes time. You can use different prints or colors of fleece to make your bag more interesting, and add a handle by tying a length braided fleece to the strips at both top corners.

*To make a matching sleepover pillow, simple cut the fabric 20” x 28” instead and continue making strips all the way around. Tie the strips on three sides, stuff the pillow with fiberfill or a pillow form, and tie off the strips on the open edge.

Pillowcase Bag

You’ll need two pillowcases that match. Use one to cover a pillow to bring along to the party. Use the other to make a bag for your gear. All you have to do is measure and mark off several spots a few inches apart across the edge band of the pillowcase (all the way around it), and carefully cut small slits through the fabric. Thread some thin rope, heavy string or ribbon, or some rawhide through the holes. Start in the middle, threading one side, then go back to the beginning and thread the other side, so the ends meet in the front center. Fill your back, tighten the laces, and tie the bag closed.

*You can add grommets if desired to make the lace holes sturdier, or ask a grown up to make buttonholes with a sewing machine.
