Making Summer Memories

Time is ticking for work-at-home moms, who desperately try to generate an income in the hours that their children are in school. In a few short days, summer vacation will be here and routines and schedules will be replaced with utter chaos.

Okay, maybe I am exaggerating a little… or not.

In any event, as we kick-off the Memorial Day weekend, I thought it would be apropos to remind overworked and underappreciated parents that your kid’s childhood is disappearing right before your eyes.

Soon that chubby baby will be a terrible two-year-old, who morphs into a sassy six-year-old, and then a tumultuous teen, who can’t wait to leave his youth and his parents far behind.

On that chipper note, I highly recommend taking time this holiday weekend to spend some quality time with your containers of sweet, innocent bliss while they still cherish your company.

Get outside and run barefoot in the grass. Go for a stroll along an empty stretch of beach at sunset. Hold hands while swinging side by side at the park. Share a smile over a melting Popsicle. Make wind chimes out of the seashells you collected during a Sunday morning dawn patrol. Pocket odd shaped rocks while hiking near your campsite and turn them into pretty paperweights with a little paint and glitter glue. Play tag with a bunch of squirt guns. Chase fireflies across the yard. Fish for worms. Set up the slip and slide, and then take a few turns yourself. Design a scavenger hunt and let your kids roam around the yard looking for ladybugs, pink flower petals, feathers, acorns and fuzzy caterpillars. Blow bubbles from a mixture of water, dish detergent and corn syrup. Play hopscotch with sidewalk chalk and a smooth rock. Or, just sit under a tree and enjoy a good book together.

Do something this weekend, and do it without a hint of ambiguity or reluctance. Do it, so you don’t end up mourning the precious moments that could have been.
