Married at Sea: Disney Cruise Weddings

cruise wedding

I’ve never written much about a Disney wedding, which is strange because I’m a blogger both for our Disney and our Marriage categories. But if you read my marriage blogs you know that I’m not a fan of big, fancy weddings, and a Disney wedding would certainly be that. Previous Disney bloggers have written a lot on the topic, so I didn’t have anything new to offer.

Until now. I just learned that the Disney Cruise line offers wedding and vow renewal packages. I’m always up for writing about a new Disney thing I didn’t know existed, and we’ve never offered details on a Disney Cruise wedding before. So let’s take a look.

Technically the Disney cruise line offers three things: weddings, vow renewals, and commitment ceremonies. They’re available on most Disney cruises, but guests on a Caribbean/Bahamian cruise have an additional option: rather than getting married on board at sea, they can opt instead for a ceremony on Castaway Cay.

Any couples holding a marriage-related ceremony on board a Disney cruise ship receive these things:

* A wedding planner (they’re called “on-site ceremony coordinators,” but we know what that means)

* One complimentary “fresh floral”

* A pianist for the ceremony and the later “reception”

* An officiant

* A Cake & Champagne celebration following the ceremony (basically the reception, where the pianist will also play), including a two-tier cake, a Minnie & Mickey figurine, and one bottle of champagne (or sparkling cider) for the toast

* Dinner for the couple on the night of the ceremony at Palo, the cruise line’s chain of adults-only restaurants

* A Commemorative Ceremony Certificate

* A free steaming of the couple’s ceremony attire

* $100 stateroom credit than can be used to most purchases (including for services) on board the ship

The couple can also pay for additional benefits, such as use of a Disney Cruise event photographer and additional floral for any party members involved in the ceremony. For couples holding their ceremony on Castaway Cay, the Disney Cruise line will provide transportation to and from the event site for the couple and their guests, and then the cake and champagne celebration will be held back on board the ship.

I’m really not a fan of Destination/fancy weddings, but I think the idea of a wedding on a Disney Cruise ship is kind of cool. I should clarify: I think the idea of being married at sea by the captain of a ship is cool. It’d be the kind of wedding I wouldn’t invite anyone to; it would be just me and Jon. However, the Disney Cruise wedding doesn’t quite seem like that: an officiant, not necessarily the ship captain (if it was the ship captain, I’d think they’d say that) is provided for the ceremony, and the Disney Cruise Line reminds guests to take care of the legalities of the wedding license before the ship leaves port.

Of course, like any Disney wedding, these are going to cost a pretty chunk of change. You know it’s going to be expensive when the price isn’t readily available; try as I might, I can’t find pricing details on the Disney Cruise Line or the Disney Fairy Tale Weddings websites. Interested parties should head to either site, or call 321.939.4610.
