I suffer from the same problem. So what can … Continue reading

Don’t Let The Media Parent Your Children

Sometimes I let Hailey watch too much TV. It’s an easy habit to fall into, especially when you are a single parent and there are so many things to do. You plop your child in front of the television, just for a few minutes so you can get something done and a habit is started. All the media in our children s lives is like another influence in the house. Our children are bombarded with messages and even if we are diligent about what they watch they may still see things that go against our values. Many shows that you … Continue reading

Disney Jr. – Live on Stage!

It’s certainly a time of change at Disney, and last week the latest took place: the switch from Playhouse Disney to Disney Jr. Thanks to Michele for pointing it out to me; I wasn’t sure if Disney Jr. was indeed the replacement for Playhouse Disney, or just an additional feature. Despite discussing it, we’re not really sure of the motivation for the name change. The most likely candidate is that Disney’s trying to compete with Nick Jr., but having names so similar seems like it will just cause more confusion than competition. I also thought that perhaps execs thought kids … Continue reading

On Demand Shows Your Kids Should Be Watching

While we do try to limit television in our house (my daughter is going on a week of absolutely no electronic media whatsoever for refusing to clean her room). Having said that, I think that there are some shows that are our go-to shows, when the kids do watch television. They are each about 20-30 minutes long, and have some educational value. When all of the homework is done, and the kids need to wind down a bit, I click over to the on demand feature and select one of the following shows. I Spy Ages 3-4 A weird little … Continue reading

Actor Tony Curtis and Comedian Greg Giraldo Die

Hollywood lost two big talents this week. Screen legend Tony Curtis died Wednesday at his Las Vegas home of a cardiac arrest. He was 85. Curtis grew up in the Bronx and tragedy followed him throughout his childhood. The family was poor, briefly giving the children to an orphanage because they couldn’t feed them. His older brother Julius was killed at age 12 when he was hit by a truck, and both his mother and younger brother Robert suffered from schizophrenia. Curtis dropped out of high school to join the Navy during WWII. Once out of the military, Curtis decided … Continue reading

Media Week in Review – June 15th – June 21st

Let’s take a look at all the fun we had this week in Media Reviews! We started out with “Relationship Magic,” a self-help book for married couples written in the form of a fairy tale to help husbands and wives more easily recognize patterns they might be perpetrating in their own lives. We then read about “Restoree,” which was author Anne McCaffrey’s first published novel. “Ashley’s Unforgettable Summer” is a cute children’s picture book about a girl who has a baby chimp for a pet, and “Coffee Rings” by Yvonne Lehman is a Christian women’s fiction novel about the accidental … Continue reading

They didn’t show up in cardigans, but the people who gathered to help carry on Fred Rogers’ legacy Sunday kept the TV star’s memory close to their hearts. The 4-year-old scholarship program named for the popular children’s TV host awards students $10,000 each to help them fund media projects and studies that focus on such issues as children’s literacy and health. Rogers’ 80-year-old wife Joanne said of the annual awards, “Fred would have been just ecstatic. He loved … Continue reading

Comedian Dick Martin Dead at 86

It is the end of a groovy, cool era man – “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” comedian Dick Martin died yesterday of respiratory complications at the age of 86. I didn’t know it until I read his obituary, but Martin lost the use of one of his lungs when he was a teenager and needed oxygen most of the day in later years. Martin met Dan Rowan in 1952 and they quickly formed their comedy team. They worked their way up the standup circuit, appearing in New York, Miami, and Las Vegas. Rowan always played the straight man while Martin was … Continue reading

What’s Up with All the Matchmaker Shows?

Survivor started it all, but reality TV seems to constantly be looking for new ways to reinvent itself. Reality Run Down They moved from a remote tropical jungle to a concrete one with billionaire Donald Trump firing the weakest contenders. The Amazing Race tested relationships during a race around the world. Then there’s the good old rose ceremony on the Bachelor. But not all reality shows are about contests anymore.
