Memorial Day has become a three day weekend that a lot of people associate with shopping and sales. The federal holiday was originally created as a day of remembrance for those who died while serving their country. Perhaps the “middle ground” between these two concepts would be represented in these deals for members of the military. Home Depot offers a 10% discount for Veterans. They also offer a 10% discount all year round for Active Duty and immediate family members of people who are in the military. The Home Depot Foundation helps address the housing needs of veterans. Today may be Halloween, but tomorrow marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. If you think that Black Friday is the official kick-off to the countdown to Santa’s visit, clearly you haven’t been to the mall recently. Amidst the pumpkins and fake black cats is a host of holly, fir trees and tinsel. With the busy holiday season upon us, now is the time to make your Thanksgiving and Christmas travel plans. This is especially important for activity-duty military personnel who can score huge discounts on airfare if they act fast. Many commercial carriers based in the United States … Continue reading

National Military Appreciation Month

May is National Military Appreciation Month, and members of our Armed Forces and their families have been able to take advantage of some truly wonderful limited time discounts. In areas where the local economy depends on military families, local businesses have been offering specials through the month of May on many different services. Probably the most spectacular offer for active members of the Armed Forces was from Jet Blue Airlines at the beginning of May. For a few days, military passengers could book travel for the month of May on Jet Blue for $1 plus the taxes and fees. This … Continue reading

Ancestry.com Free Military Searches

Over 43 million Americans have served in the United States military since the Revolutionary War. Each one has a story. In our own family, we have four who are currently active duty. They’re part of a long tradition of service, from my dad who used his brains in the Air Force to my grandfather and his brother who wore the Marine uniform proudly. It goes back further than that, though I’m far from the family historian. Ancestry.com is going to help me with that! Through D-Day (June 6th), military searches are free. Ever wonder if those stories about your Uncle … Continue reading

Free NRA Membership for Active Duty Military

The National Rifle Association exists to “promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis.” To that end, they offer a lot of educational programs for people of all ages. They have a stringent safety course, and a youth program that is first class. Since 1871, the NRA has fought to maintain the right to keep and bear arms, and to improve the accuracy and safety awareness of the gun-owning public. With millions of members and steady growth, they will continue to do so. Education is their primary goal. I heartily recommend their Eddie the Eagle safety program for children … Continue reading

What is too Far in the Military?

This entry was going to start off on new developments of those deployed, but after reading an article I can’t help but feel compelled to write about it. I know many won’t agree with my thoughts but we all have our own opinion right? I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels this way. How many of you have watched a movie with your spouse or even a television show that portrayed a service member? I’m sure at least once if not many more times. What about the flaws you were sure to have seen or just the fact … Continue reading

Travel Deals in Paradise for Military Families

Hawaii is widely known as the “Jewel of the Pacific.” With its cobalt blue waters; white, pink, green and black sand beaches; towering waterfalls; and lush green tropical rainforests, it’s no surprise that the state serves as the backdrop for many popular movies and television shows. The “Aloha State’s” reputation for natural beauty precedes itself, however, behind the touristy facade, Hawaii consists of fortress islands, bearing one of the heaviest concentrations of military forces on this planet. On Oahu (home to Honolulu and the island that sees the most tourists) alone, there are multiple military bases, including the historic Pearl … Continue reading

Being a Military Wife

I’m sitting here in what is left of my kitchen. There are four strangers walking though my house and going through everything I own. All that I have is in their hands now and all I can do is give them an envelope of cash and hope that I see my things again someday. I am a military wife. “Active Duty Dependent Spouse” is my official title. I’m hardly dependent though. My husband and I have been married for seven years now and he’s been dependent upon me all this time to manage, furnish and decorate his home, shop for … Continue reading
