Mixing Business and Babies

It has occurred to me that people might come upon this home – based business blog with many different questions related to home – based business on their minds. While I am not a mind reader, I can imagine that some of you may have come here to read articles that might help you to answer the question of when is a good time to start your home – based business. Even more specifically, there may be some of you out there who have very young children at home. You may be wondering whether there is any way that babies and home – based businesses can coexist.

The short answer to your question is that yes, babies and home – based businesses can coexist. The catch is that to make it work, you must choose the right business. By “the right business”, I mean a business that fits not only you and your talents and abilities, but a business that fits your life as the parent of a very young child.

For example, many people have talents and abilities that qualify them for work as a freelancer. The world of freelancing is far more diverse than just freelance writing. The thing that makes freelancing such a good fit for parents of young children is that you can take on as little or as much work as your schedule allows. You can start small, and then as you master the ins and outs of your (and your baby’s) schedule, you can add more to your plate.

Also, look for work that can be done outside of normal business hours, because that is honestly when you are most likely to be available for any length of (somewhat) uninterrupted work time. Some call center positions and online customer support positions offer these hours, as does being a freelancer. I am sure that there are other possibilities out there too, I am just not aware of them.

Work that you can do online is great. Not only can you do your work any time, you can do it with a baby in your lap, curled up on a nursing pillow. You can do some work while your baby naps, and more when he is asleep in the evening.

These are just a few pointers to get you started. With an open mind, a little energy, and a little time, you can start a part time home- based business when your children are very small. You will have to make adjustments to your schedule and your business over time as your children grow and their needs change, but know that that, too, is entirely doable.
