Movie Night: Monsters University

monstersU

My two older children loved watching Monsters Inc., so naturally I introduced my younger child to the movie. As I expected they also loved it.  When Monsters University came out I could not wait to bring my two little girls to see it.  I love memories of movie night.  The movie opened last Friday but where we live movie tickets on Monday are only $5.00 so we waited. When movie day arrived we were all super excited to get to the theater.

Upon arrival it was clear that most waited until the cheap ticket day to see the movie.  The theater was packed and all the showings of Monsters University were sold out except for the later show.  We decided to purchase the tickets and wait it out until the next showing.  That show also sold out so I am happy we already had tickets.  I began to wonder, as I purchased popcorn and candy, if all the hassle was worth it.  From the first few minutes it was clear every minute we waited was worth it.  The movie was super cute and simply hilarious.  In fact, I would dare say it was better than the first one but I may have to watch the first one again to be sure.  My girls loved it also and asked to see it again next week.

The movie was filled with innocent fun.  Nothing stood out to me as being too adult or playing on a sick or cheap sense of humor to get a laugh.  The movie emphasized the importance of teamwork and friendship.  My teenage son said the movie was about monsters and not about life.  He doesn’t see how anyone can be influenced by a movie about fake characters.  I disagree.  We moms know that what our kids watch is very important and where they get some of their ideas.  The only negative thing in the movie was that Mike and Sully did not finish college.  However, in most movies, the characters do something wrong but it all turns out right in the end.  In this movie, Sully confesses a transgression and gets him and Mike kicked out of Monsters University.  No twist of fate or last minute heart change allows them back in the university.  I found that refreshing.  They had to learn their own way and work very heard to get to the top.  So, bravo, Pixar, for making a movie that the whole family can enjoy and learn the importance of hard work and teamwork.
