Movies Week in Review – April 21st-25th

We had some fun here in Movies this week. In case you weren’t able to join us, here’s a recap of reviews to help you decide which films you might like to watch.

We started the week with “Glory Road,” the story of a high school basketball team that won the NCAA championship with an entire starting lineup comprised of black players – the first team in history to ever break through that racial barrier. Their path was not easy. Many of the players suffered abuse and violence, the coach’s family was threatened, and everyone had to put aside their differences for the sake of the team. But they paved the way for more and more black players to earn respect in the sports arena, and this film tells the story very well.

We go from high school basketball to college football with John Wayne’s “Trouble Along the Way.” When rascally Steve Williams is in danger of losing custody of his daughter, he knows he must get a respectable job to prove himself a fit parent. He lands a job coaching the football team at St. Anthony’s, and finds himself enjoying the religious atmosphere. He also finds himself enjoying the pretty caseworker sent to oversee his transformation into respectability.

Then we are treated to another guest blog by Christian blogger Dale Harcombe. “The Boy with Green Hair” features Dean Stockwell as a child who, for some strange reason, begins to grow green hair, and shows the reactions of the townspeople to his unusual predicament.

Ah, how we love a good musical! “Tristi’s Favorite Musicals” is only a partial list, but it’s fun to gather a bunch of oldies-but-goodies together and sit and sigh over them.

We ended the week with “The Howards of Virginia,” starring Cary Grant as a slightly manic Virginia farmer who wants to see his country gain freedom over King George the Third. We see a portrayal of Patrick Henry’s empassioned speeches to the House of Burgesses and the starvation faced by the foot soldiers.

We hope you enjoyed this look back at the week and that you’ll be able to join us again here in Movies.
