My Day on the Scarsdale Diet

This is a two-week diet that is high in fruits and vegetables, very low carbohydrate and fairly low in protein. See my original blog on the diet for full details.

I decided it was time to try Scarsdale since it was one of the few diets I have not tried and I am trying to lose quite a few pounds of pregnancy weight. As you can see by the title of this blog, I didn’t quite make it the full two weeks. In fact, I didn’t even make it through the first day! I did lose two pounds that day but this diet totally stunk so I quit. I’ll tell you why:

First, the baby woke me at 0300 for a feeding. After the feeding, I tossed and turned for a while and just as I dozed off, my toddler woke at 0400. There was no sleeping after that so I made my morning coffee and began my day. A half grapefruit after only five hours of sleep is no way to start a day. There just happened to be a lovely piece of spice cake in the fridge that begged to ease my discomfort. If you’ve ever been sleep deprived then you know the lure of the simple sugar and starchy carbohydrate that comes with the condition. So much for my first meal on the Scarsdale Diet.

The morning didn’t get much better from there. With two kids who woke up on the wrong side of the crib and toddler bed respectively, a piece of lean chicken and a tomato just weren’t going to cut it. I went for an omelet instead. Three eggs, six small sausage patties and an ounce of cheddar. That beat the heck out of lean chicken.

For dinner, I went with a skinless chicken breast and a salad. I ate the meat first as a diet low in protein can lead to muscle wasting (your body eats it’s own muscle for the extra energy it needs). Then I finished with the salad and half a grapefruit for dessert.

Needless to say, my day on the Scarsdale diet simply did not work out as planned.

The good news is that when I woke up the next morning, I had lost two pounds anyway.
More news on why in my next post!
