Not a Good Disney Night at the Oscars

This year Disney’s various movie companies were nominated for around 20 Oscars at the 2007 Academy Awards held last night.

I had hoped for a win for “Cars”, if only to justify my boys’ adoration for the movie, but unfortunately the talking cars were outclassed by the dancing penguins in the best animated feature category, and Melissa Etheridge’s “I Need to Wake Up” from Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” ousted “Cars” from the best original song category. From the movie point of view, I actually think that “An Inconvenient Truth” was better than “Cars” (don’t tell my boys I said that!), but for songs I much prefer “Our Town” by Randy Newman – the “Cars” entry – but hey what do I know?

Animation aside, Disney owned companies were nominated for Oscars for the following movies; “Apocalypto”, “Lifted” (short animation), “Little Match Girl” (short animation), “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”, “The Prestige”, “The Queen” and “Venus”. Of these only “Pirates” and “The Queen” managed to convert their nominations into wins.

I think that I was most surprised at “The Queen” not upgrading more nominations than the other movies – they’ve won other categories at other awards shows this year – so to only win one was, in my opinion, a little disappointing but I guess that since the one they did win was one of the major awards with Helen Mirren taking the Leading Actress title, it’s some consolation!

This year was bound to be a Bloodbath of Greats at the Oscars because of the high standard of movies that were released in 2006. It was a pity not to see Disney do better than they did, simply because I want to see them in business for a very long time and awards mean financing – but in a year of excellent movies, I guess the honors had to stretch a long way to recognize as much of the talent created last year as possible.

I’m on a mission to lose weight. Keep up with my journey here Momma’s on a Diet
