One of the Best Things About a Home-Based Business—Autonomy

We have had a recurrent topic here in the Home Business Blog about the things we love about owning and operating our own home businesses. Today, when I was sipping my coffee and looking out at another rainy Pacific Northwest day—I felt grateful for the of a home-based business. How nice it is to feel independent and sovereign in my own little corner of the world!

Now, autonomy does not necessarily mean that we do not have anybody we have to answer to. I don’t know about you, but my clients certainly want to tell me what to do at times! BUT, I get to decide how to structure my day and my time and I’m basically on my own running my little home-based business. I know that some people do not work well with autonomy and that can be one of the reasons that the flounder and falter with a small business—I for one, thrive without having someone looking over my shoulder telling me what to do!

Ah, autonomy—self-reliance and self-rule—no policy statements and lists of regulations to follow, no forms to fill out if I want to take a vacation day or even an entire week off. I get to decide the order of the work I do and I even get to decide WHO I work with. I can take an assignment or job or not, depending on my own choices. Of course, this means there’s no one else to fall back on and no one else to blame when things go wrong—but that’s a small price to pay for all this autonomy! For someone who really doesn’t much like being told what to do and CERTAINLY does not like being told how to do it—running a home-based business is a perfect fit.
