Outdoor Living Spaces: Simple or Extravagant?

Does the area you enjoy outside your home have to look like your living room or appear to have been created by a designer to be considered an outdoor living space? I don’t think so. If it’s an area you use often or “live in” such as a patio, deck, or even just part of your yard or garden, I think it qualifies.

I don’t have anything fancy, as our land is still a work in progress, but I prefer to stay outside more often than not when the weather is right. I enjoy barbecuing instead of cooking in the kitchen, eating outdoors, or just sitting outside to relax in the evening instead of being cooped up insides. I prefer the stillness, or the sound of birds singing, to the TV.

I sit in my simple resin chair with my little table (usually surrounded by outdoor toys and bikes) and I’m quite content. While I hope to make my outdoor living space more inviting and perhaps entertain there more often, I’m really quite happy to soak up some sun or close my eyes and let the breeze wash over my face. I don’t need fancy furniture for those things.

So, if you feel like your patio furniture isn’t exactly magazine cover worthy, don’t worry about it. Get outside and enjoy the world around you. You may just get the urge to do more to make your yard or garden into an outdoor living space, once you realize how calming and restful it is to spend more time outside.

The more time I spend out in the yard, the more relaxed I feel. At the same time, I also become more inspired to make my little area a comfortable outdoor space for the entire family and our friends to visit, eat, or just relax. I’ve got some things in mind, so I’ll let you know how it turns out.
