Beauty and the Beast to Receive 3D Release

After the phenomenal success of “The Lion King” 3D release, plans have resumed to bring “Beauty and the Beast” back to theaters – in 3D of course. Years ago Disney talked of bringing the Oscar-nominated film back to theaters in 3D, but things never coalesced. For reasons known only to Disney execs, “The Lion King” was instead chosen as the first Disney film to get a 3D makeover. It was a wild success, with the nearly 20-years-old movie topping the box office for weeks ahead of brand new films. With that resounding victory under their belts, now Disney execs have … Continue reading

Botanicals for Health and Beauty

Botanicals are wonderful for use around the home. Ancient Europeans made liberal use of herbs for many applications. Now, scientist are finding that these gifts of the natural world have powerful anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and and antibacterial properties. Here is a guide to some of the more common herbs and their basic remedies. Lavender Lavender is a favorite herb for most people because of its pleasant scent. It can be an effective antimicrobial, which means that it kills germs. Because of this, using lavender to wash or clean makes good sense. In fact, the root word of lavender is “lavare,” which … Continue reading

Crazy Diets: The Sleeping Beauty Diet

Now, I know why Aurora wanted to sleep for so long before being wed to her Prince. She was simply trying to lose enough weight to fit into her wedding gown. I wonder if all princesses are aware of The Sleeping Beauty Diet. Is that how they stay so fit and trim? I think I have come across a diet for even the laziest person in the land. Can you imagine a diet with no eating restrictions, no exercise, and a lot of rest? When I say rest I mean sedated sleep. I will have to take a better look … Continue reading

Beauty and Marriage

Knowing I was a big fan of Elizabeth Taylor Mick mentioned early this morning that she had died. The world has lost a great actress. Her career spanned seven decades and who could forget her as a beguiling young beauty in National Velvet or her great roles as Virginia Woolf? She was also extremely beautiful but it seems that her beauty did not bring her great happiness. As well as being remembered for her acting, and winning two academy awards, she is synonymous in some people’s minds with marriage and divorce. Eight marriages included her marriage to and divorce from … Continue reading

Teen Beauty Queen Reigns Supreme

What would you do if your daughter won the most prestigious beauty pageant in the nation? I’m not talking “Toddlers and Tiaras” here; try having Miss America live under your roof before she’s even old enough to legally vote or consume alcohol. Mark and Jamie Scanlan are dealing with the unusual situation right now. The Scanlan’s are parents to Teresa Scanlan, who shocked the country last week, when she was crowned Miss American at just 17 years old. The recent high school graduate is the youngest contestant to be honored with the title since 1921. While Scanlan may have been … Continue reading

Add Beauty to the Winter Garden

You look outside, and it’s raining, or snowing, or at its worst, it’s slushing again. I’m not altogether fond of slush, and although I enjoy the beauty of freshly-fallen snow, the piles of gradually darkening snow do get on my nerves as winter wears on. I yearn for spring. This is why I have created a winter garden. We live in a rather mild climate, so a winter garden can last through the cooler months without suffering serious damage. We placed ours next to the house in a place that is a few degrees warmer and a little more sheltered … Continue reading

Do You Have A Beauty Graveyard?

Boil, boil, toil and trouble, old mousse leaks and hair gel bubbles. Do you have a beauty graveyard living under your sink, on the corner of a counter or stashed in a closet somewhere? It can be really scary, such as the lipstick that has turned all sticky or the body lotion that smells off. It happens to the best of us. We buy a great new product that is on sale and promises to do the job. We go for that new fancy bottle of perfume only to find that it doesn’t mix well with our skin or the … Continue reading

Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along

Last February I spent a weekend visiting my sister-in-law baking cookies and watching Disney movies; our husbands both weren’t included (though hers was in the house, but he mostly hid from us). We first made plans for our Disney weekend discussing “Beauty and the Beast.” We both love the movie so much we always sing along with the songs, and usually follow along with the dialog as well. We talked about how we can never watch the movie with anyone else, because others usually find our tendency to recite the whole film annoying. So we figured we’d match each other … Continue reading

Death of a Beauty Queen

Sit back and ask yourself why you want to lose weight? When I asked myself that question I am ashamed to say it was out of vanity. I wanted to become some great beauty that walked down the street hearing mutterings about how I looked amazing after having four children. After years of my husband telling me that vanity is not a goal and only a concrete goal will give the tool to accomplish, I finally figured out what he was trying to say. Vain aspirations will achieve vain results. My desire to be something or someone else was not … Continue reading
