Fitness Tips: How to Use the Heat to Your Advantage

With temperatures soaring as high as 109 degrees here, the heat is one of the first things on my mind in the morning and the last before I go to bed. Let me preface the following thoughts with the following cautions. Exercising in the heat can be dangerous. If your body temperature exceeds 107 degrees, you can cause irreversible brain and internal organ damage. Even if your body temperature does not rise to such an excessive degree, you can experience heat exhaustion, so never exercise in the middle of the day outdoors. As I write this, it is 5 a.m. … Continue reading

All You Need Is 30 Minutes a Day

When it comes to exercise, is more of it better? You may sometimes question whether or not the recommended 30 minutes a day of exercise is beneficial. I know a few people who don’t believe this because they don’t feel satisfied unless they have gotten in 45 to 60 minutes of exercise. For some reason, the 30 minutes can feel like it’s not enough. Well, a small study says differently. Whether you exercise for 30 or 60 minutes a day, you end up losing the same amount of weight. I think it’s the mindset that if you work out more, … Continue reading

Too Much of a Good Thing

I didn’t know there was such a thing but apparently there are fitness enthusiasts who can actually exercise too much. In fact, there are people out there who almost break down when they miss a day of exercise. While that sounds like a better struggle than what I sometimes have, it is a real concern for some. In fact, people can have an unhealthy obsession with working out. They can also deplete the energy that exercise is supposed to increase because they are doing too much. And pushing yourself too far in your workout routine can also lead to injuries. … Continue reading

Putting Together a Fitness Schedule

Several years ago I had a membership to Curves, a for-women-only fitness center. One of the things I remember really liking is the concept of circuit training. Circuit training is when you do short amounts of resistance exercise, focusing on one muscle group at a time. Sprinkled in the mix you also have some aerobic exercises. The reason I liked this is because I prefer variety. I can’t do floor exercises, such as leg lifts, for 20 minutes at a time. To me it is just plain boring. So when things get a little mixed up, I tend to be … Continue reading

F.I.T.N.E.S.S.

I love acronyms. They are a great way to remember something or drive home a point. So in this blog I have developed an acronym for the word FITNESS. “F” is for form. This is a specific way of moving when you are exercising. It oftentimes can help prevent injuries (especially when participating in strength training) but it can also maximize the movement of your muscles. This leads to better results. “I” is for ideal. You need to find the ideal exercise regimen and eating plan that benefits you the most. This may take time, some research and trying out … Continue reading

Green Lawn Care

It’s summer and if you have a home, chances are you have to cut the lawn. Personally, I like to cut the lawn for the exercise, but I never thought of the damage something as simple as mowing could be doing to the environment. The Environmental Protection Agency says that, in one hour’s use, a gas powered mower emits as much pollution as 11 cars and that a riding mower emits as much as 34 cars. Americans use approximately 580 million gallons of gas for mowers each year. It is estimated that 30% of the water used on the East … Continue reading
