Interview with “The Sing-off” Contestants, Vocal Point, Part One

Are you watching this season’s competition on “The Sing-Off?” If you’re not, you’re missing a treat. Sixteen talented a capella groups were featured on the premiere, with two groups voted off to start. Tonight, the battle continues, and one of the remaining competitors has my heart—and the heart of my family—all the way. Named Vocal Point, this group of nine young men from nearby Brigham Young University has the chops—and the lungs—to make it all the way. I was honored to interview three of these guys this last week, and I appreciate them for taking time out of taping and … Continue reading

Book Review: Safe Money Millionaire by Brett Kitchen and Ethan Kap

Over the last month, I’ve been talking to financial advisors who have given me reasons to keep money in a 401(k) fund and not to pull it out even when chaos breaks loose in the economy. About two weeks ago, though, I read the book “Safe Money Millionaire” by Brett Kitchen and Ethan Kap, and heard a different side to the story. Kitchen and Kap are both in the field of insurance – but not just any insurance. They market cash value insurance plans, and that is the message they deliver in their book – if you put your money … Continue reading

Book Review: Her Best Catch by Lindi Peterson

I recently had the chance to read “Her Best Catch,” a Christian romance by Lindi Peterson and published by Bell Bridge Books. I enjoyed the story quite a bit. Our main character is Allison Doll, a woman who’s not quite thirty and has all but given up on romance. She’s an auditor by profession, a devoted Christian, and she lives with her mother and grandmother, seeking to support and comfort them after the tragic death of her father. Each of these women is seeking comfort in a different way, and Allison finds her greatest strength in her religious beliefs. When … Continue reading

Is Your Marriage Reaching Its Full Potential?

Is your Marriage Reaching Its full Potential? It’s a question we each might ask of our marriage. But what sort of qualities and attitudes will help ensure it does reach its full potential? It is interesting sometimes not only to see how otter marriages work but to read up on those things that help us get the best out of our marriages. On a site I was reading recently you can grade your marriage. Since I’m a great one for quizzes and the like I couldn’t help grading my marriage. And received a huge shock. I was shocked to find … Continue reading

Every Body is Different

Talking about sex isn’t always comfortable. We see sex as being a private thing between husband and wife, and that’s how it should be, but there are times when problems occur, and at those times, it can be appropriate to seek help. It seems to be expected that sex should be an enjoyable thing for both partners. However, for many people, it’s not. They may not have the physical reactions of pleasure that they would like to have during the act, and this can lead to resentment in the marriage. If one spouse is having all the fun, and the … Continue reading

Benefit Your Marriage

Have you heard about the seven Fs that can make or break a marriage? I read about them this week. If you remember, I did a series of alphabetical blogs at one stage. Back in February I touched on a few in the article F Means Fail. I was interested to see some of mine mentioned there matched up with the 7 mentioned in the book I read. Their 7 are: ‘Friendship, Family, Faith, Finances, Fighting, Forgiving and Fertilization.’ Fertilization didn’t mean sex and procreation, though I’m sure that would come into it too. It actually meant spending time fertilizing … Continue reading

Living Together Before Marriage

Living together before marriage is very common in today’s society. It almost seems to be the expected thing these days. I’ve heard people say its better to try it first and see whether you’re suited. But living together is not as good a test as some people might like to think. In fact statistics show those who live together before marriage are more likely to divorce than those who don’t. I’ve had friends who have lived together before marriage and translated that to a successful marriage. I also know those who have lived together and then, as soon as marriage … Continue reading

Easter and Marriage

Easter means different things to different people. As I’ve read a couple of other blogs I see some of those different traditions in families come out. To some people it means Easter bunnies and Easter egg hunts. To others it means church. Sometimes there is a combining of the two. In our marriage and those of our son and daughter and their spouses, it means church, remembering the first Easter and what Easter is all about – the death and resurrection of Jesus. One couple I know who are still on their L plates in their marriage has started a tradition … Continue reading

Intimacy and Desire in Marriage

Today I have something a bit different for the marriage blog. I have a book review Intimacy and Desire Awaken the Passion in Your Relationship by Dr David Schnarch Paperback $35.00 This book raises several interesting and, I dare to suggest, controversial issues. One of them is that lack of sexual desire doesn’t necessarily mean there is a problem in the marriage. This is certainly different to a lot of the popular view of the day and the impression we get from current movies and TV shows, which suggest that if you’re not have sex like rabbits there’s something drastically … Continue reading
