How Can You Tell if You Are Really a Christian?

How can you tell if you have really come to know Jesus and entered into a relationship with Him? In our home bible study group we recently started studying the John’s letters and 1 John 2 gives some answers to this question. I John 2:3 says we ‘know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commands.’ Obeying rules and regulations are not our entry ticket to heaven. That comes only through knowing Jesus. But, when we do know Jesus and have come into a relationship with Him, then we will want to please Him by keeping … Continue reading

Author Interview: Sandra Grey, Part Two

We are joined again by LDS author Sandra Grey, author of “Traitor.” If you missed yesterday’s installment, click here. Sandra, in your exciting new LDS historical novel, you go into quite a lot of detail about code encryption. Was it difficult to find and then relay this information? Mr. Leo Marks, head of Communications at Special Operations Executive (SOE) in Britain, wrote an incredible memoir of his experiences during the war entitled “Between Silk and Cyanide” (HarperCollins 1998) – over six hundred pages long and more exciting to me than “Harry Potter.” I read every word even the appendages. Marie’s … Continue reading

Parents. . .Don’t Frustrate Your Children

In my last blog, I talked about the importance of my children understanding that their obedience isn’t required by me or my husband, but by God. What I mean by that is that the order of things was set up by God himself. . .not by mom or dad. I think most parents understand the psychology of requiring obedience, consequences, and consistency. All of our pop psychology books are filled with these ideas. Gosh, even the Super Nanny has the naughty chair–a consequence for misbehavior. If you have found yourself struggling to bring your child into obedience, I am going … Continue reading

Exclusivity Or Not?

An argument arose between the disciples as to who was the greatest, Luke 9:46. Jesus not only heard the argument, He knew what they were thinking, Luke 9:47. Does it scare or concern you that Jesus knows your innermost thoughts. He knows what is behind the words we say and the way we act. So, what did Jesus mean by placing a child next to him and saying what he did in verse 48? Jesus wanted to overturn all their ideas about greatness. He wanted the disciples to be not self centered and exclusive, but welcoming. What about you? How … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 1:10-14

After being overcome by the Spirit and retiring to his room, Lehi has a marvelous vision in which he sees God sitting upon His throne, and then sees One descend and come toward him. He recognizes this One as being the Lamb of God. Picking up with verse ten: And he also saw twelve others following him, and their brightness did exceed that of the stars in the firmament. These twelve represent the twelve apostles, and their luster, being that of the stars, is somewhat less than that of Christ Himself, who was described as having a luster of the … Continue reading

Waiting Prayerfully

To wait prayerfully means allowing God to speak to you through His Word and through a time of prayer. For my devotional time I have a journal which I keep for my reflections on the bible passages I read. My bible is littered with dates written next to verses where God has spoken to me. These journals go back years and take up a lot of room in our house. But I would never part with them. Memory is at times a fickle thing. Since my journals are all dated and indexed, I can go back and see exactly what … Continue reading

Confession

Who do we make confession to? The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ is our advocate. I believe it is Christ who we are to pray to and ultimately confess our sins to. “My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. (1 John 2:1-2) Prior to Jesus’ coming, Nehemiah gives us an example of confession to God for … Continue reading

Being Sick

A week prior to this writing I became very sick with the flu then a double ear infection. During this bout of misery I was trying to imagine what good could be found in feeling the way I did—like I said I was sick and probably not thinking clearly. As dramatic as it sounds, I started to wonder the “what-ifs” and think about my children being without a mother and my husband being without a wife. Then I had to snap back to reality and remind myself, I was just sick, I was not dying! While I was lying in … Continue reading

Setting Goals for Your Christian Journey

The following is a personal scoring chart for you to use for yourself to mark your own progress in your Christian walk. Just circle between 0 to 10 depending where you fall on this spectrum; 0 being not at all, 10 being always. Perhaps set some goals for yourself based on the answers you give today and check back again in six months or so. This isn’t to make anyone feel inadequate in any way. None of us have “arrived” at complete holiness but we should all desire to grow in our faith. My church attendance is regular. 0 1 … Continue reading
