Special Needs Children and Obesity

I have heard a lot of talk about obesity in children. Advice to prevent that ranges from “feed your child better foods” to “turn off the video games”. Parents of kids who have certain special needs require more tools than those pieces of advice. Your child’s medications could be affecting his or her weight. Kids that are extremely overweight, or obese, face certain health risks. They may develop insulin resistance, hypertension, or type 2 diabetes. These kids could be experiencing sleep apnea, which means that they are unable to get restful sleep. Some children who are overweight will begin puberty … Continue reading

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom

From a possible old French Disney card-based rpg? Of all the special events held at Disney World, two have stood out as the most appealing to me: the Epcot Food & Wine Festival, and scavenger hunts throughout the parks. The latter is for D23 members only, which is just another reason why I might want in the fan club. Now Walt Disney World is taking that whole scavenger hunt concept one step further, with its new role-playing game Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom, announced on the official Parks blog at the beginning of September. The game, kicking off in early … Continue reading

Explore the Disney Universe

One of my favorite party games is called “Smash Brothers.” It’s a Nintendo game wherein players control various famous characters from across the company’s franchises in a series of knock-down drag-out battles. I find getting to control Yoshi one minute and Link the next more enticing than Nintendo’s other common multi-player games, such as any of the sport or arcade games featured on Wii Play. Anyone who’s read my Disney blog for a while knows that my favorite video game is “Kingdom Hearts,” and no small part of that is because during it I get to play and interact with … Continue reading

Summer Disneyland Deals

For the most part the Disney Parks post their special offers on the relevant dedicated pages, which I’ve examined here for you before. Occasionally Disney has other promotions going on that may or may not make it onto the Special Offers page, and today I’m going to cover those. Over the past two weeks the official Disney Parks blog has announced a variety of summertime Disneyland deals, and not all of them are viewable on the park’s Special Offers site. One is very similar to a deal I covered last time: if you book a Disneyland vacation by this Friday, … Continue reading

Will I Still Have To Buy Health Insurance?

The Affordable Care Act has been in existence for a little over a year now. Since it was signed, there have been several lawsuits regarding some of the more controversial parts of it. In the past year, the House of Representatives voted to repeal health care reform. This can leave a person wondering about what one can expect from the Affordable Care Act. Will you still be required to buy health insurance in 2014? The part of the Affordable Care Act that has gotten a lot of attention is the requirement that all Americans purchase health insurance in 2014. Those … Continue reading

“General Hospital” Book Debuts in April

I knew that Disney liked to publish books that tie-in with its other properties. Browsing the children’s section at any library or bookstore will reveal a plethora of titles sharing their names with popular Disney movies and television series. I’m sure that the young adult sections also contain titles continuing the adventures of popular Disney Channel characters for the teen set. But I never anticipated Disney publishing novels for adults based on figures from its non-branded channels. Then I read the news from Stitch Kingdom; that’s exactly what’s happening as the Disney-owned Hyperion Books plans to release a novel based … Continue reading

Turner Classic Movies Film Festival

Fans of Disney and classic films alike should consider attending this year’s Turner Classic Movies Classic Film Festival. Stitch Kingdom reports that for 2011 TCM joined up with D23, the official Disney fan group, to dedicate a portion of the festival to the works of Walt Disney. The Disney films and shorts presented all fit into this year’s theme of Music and the Movies. Thus the only feature length Disney movie shown at the festival will be a recently restored copy of 1940’s “Fantasia.” The four-day event will also include a screening of select Silly Symphonies shorts introduced/curated by film … Continue reading

Disney’s New Destination D

Remember when I talked about Disney’s new fan club D23, and couldn’t decide whether or not to join? The price of membership was a little high, and I was mostly interested in the earlier and cheaper ticket benefits D23 members get for the D23 Disney convention. A Disney convention sounds like a playground to me. Only tickets for the convention are open to the public, not just fan club members, hence my indecision. Well, it looks like it’ll be another year before I need to make up my mind. Disney execs have decided not to hold the D23 convention again … Continue reading

Will High School Musical Continue?

Parents, you might need to console your tweens and teens: it’s a bittersweet day for fans of Disney’s mammoth “High School Musical” franchise. After two Disney Channel movies, one silver screen flick, and countless albums, merchandise, theater and international spin-offs, the era of the Wildcats as we know it is over. But the story isn’t entirely finished, thus the silver lining to the cloud. Ashley Tisdale, who played the drama queen antagonist of the series, signed on to star in the spin-off tv movie “Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure.” The movie starts filming this summer for a 2011 release on the Disney … Continue reading
