Not a Fan of Pet Movies, Pt. 1

A short while ago I mentioned animal adventure movies, a type I find best exemplified by the likes of “Homeward Bound,” “Milo and Otis,” or “Babe.” Not many movies belong to this subgenre of pet films, but that shouldn’t matter because as a pet lover I ought to revel in all animal films, right? Wrong. Pet adventure movies are just about the only animal films I can take. I find most other pet films soppy or overly sentimental. I don’t mean to insult those who love them, I just can’t watch them. I think it’s because many other pet movies … Continue reading

The Free Entertainment Challenge

This summer, we can challenge ourselves to keep the kids (and the whole family actually) entertained with things that don’t cost anything (or at least very little). Here is what we have come up with so far… Because of the holiday, there was a lot to do this weekend. Today, we attended our town’s Fourth of July festivities. First there was the parade. My husband and my oldest son rode their bikes, while the rest of us cheered. The little kids got to catch candy thrown from the parade floats. Afterward, there were games and prizes offered for the kids, … Continue reading

Where the Red Fern Grows

I was pleasantly surprised to turn on the television and find that “Where the Red Fern Grows” was about to begin. It had been several years since I had watched the movie or read the book. The G rated Doty-Dayton Productions movie was released in 1974 based on the novel by Wilson Rawls. This heartwarming story shows how one young boy learns the lessons of a man as he struggles with his family through the tough times of the 1930s. There is nothing more that Billy wants than a coon hound pup. However his father cannot afford one. His grandfather, … Continue reading

Two of a Kind

If you discovered your ex was dating someone who looked like they could be your twin would you A.) Be complimented B.) Be Insulted or C.) Be completely freaked out? Well, you have to wonder how Eddie Murphy’s ex-wife/fiancée/girlfriend (whatever she was before they split following their vow exchange in Bora Bora on New Year’s Day, which turned out to be legally non-binding) Tracey Edmonds is feeling now that the actor is dating her reflection. Okay, maybe they don’t look exactly alike, but some say Lara LaRue is a dead ringer for Edmonds and Murphy couldn’t be happier. If you … Continue reading

Looking Backward: Shashi

When I was a very little girl, my mother still had her German shepherd dog, Shashi. At least… that’s what we all called her. Her official name was Wildwoods Scheherazade, and she was a purebred, papered, pedigreed shepherd my mom had bought after she graduated college. When my mom was getting ready to get married and move out, my great-grandmother refused to let Shashi leave — so the dog stayed with my grandmother and great-grandmother. Shashi was a beautiful all-black shepherd. We have all sorts of funny family stories about her. She was so scared of thunder and lightning that … Continue reading

Silver Alert

You’ve probably heard of Amber Alerts — a way of spreading the message far and wide about missing and/or abducted children. Over the last few years, individual states have been working on a similar Silver Alert program. The Silver Alert program was created to help quickly locate missing persons who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairment. The idea is very similar to the Amber Alert: get information out quickly to local law enforcement, radio stations, television stations, and more. Criteria for issuing a Silver Alert may vary from one state to another. Here’s an example of criteria from the … Continue reading

More Ways To Reduce Your Diabetes Risk

Little changes in your life can add up to a HUGE decrease in your risk of developing diabetes. You don’t have to do something dramatic to help protect your body. Drinking just one regular soda every day can raise your risk of developing diabetes more than eighty percent. All those empty calories can add up to weight gain — a major risk factor for diabetes. Switch to diet soda if you must drink soda; drinking water or unsweetened tea is much better for you! Skipping breakfast can raise your risk of developing diabetes as much as fifty percent. They don’t … Continue reading

Are You Hosting A Super Bowl Party?

I was standing in the express lane at Wal-Mart this afternoon hoping to pay for my laundry detergent and package of paper towels quickly. I figured I had a good chance since the guy in front of me only had one item in his cart. Man, was I wrong, wrong, wrong. His one item happened to be a 32-inch flat screen TV and before he had time to reach for his wallet, five (and I do mean five) Wal-Mart employees swarmed him like ants on jelly. I still don’t know what all the fuss was about (it’s not like he … Continue reading

The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause Review

I told you a few weeks ago about our plans to see the Santa Clause 3 when it opened and Friday afternoon, that’s exactly what we did. The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause is the third in the Santa Clause franchise that began back in 1993. The great thing about this movie franchise is that the same actors have maintained their roles and we’ve literally watched the young man who plays Charlie grow up in the part. When we last saw them, Scott Calvin aka Santa Clause found his Mrs. Clause in Charlie’s high school principal. Now happily married … Continue reading

It’s Beautiful Outside: Get Out Of The House

It’s a beautiful day here, the sun is shining and the air is cool, but crisp. My daughter was sprawled out on the sofa bed watching some cartoons when she announced that she was bored. I was standing there drinking my coffee and feeling rather bored with just hanging out there myself. We looked at each other and I told her to go get dressed. I finished my coffee and found my shoes and we shut the television off and went outside. We took one of the dogs with us and took a long walk around the neighborhood. My daughter … Continue reading
