“Smart Choices” May Not Be So Smart After All

Don’t believe everything a box of cereal tells you. Lots of foods are packaged with little logos and stickers, telling us how healthy the stuff inside is. But is it really that healthy? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says maybe not. They’re taking a closer look at the actual content of popular foods like cereal and crackers — with an eye for whether or not consumers are being mislead about the health benefits. One program being targeted is the “Smart Choices” sticker — the little green check mark on certain foods, declaring that the contents are indeed a Smart … Continue reading

The Luckiest Turtle

The turtle in question was already named Lucky… and then he earned it. Box turtle Lucky and his lady friend Lovey have a safe and happy life in their enclosed pen in a California backyard. But back in July, owner Sally Pyne found both turtles outside their pen. It seems a raccoon had shown up in the yard, attracted by food left for Pyne’s outside kitty. Lovey survived the encounter without harm, but Lucky was not quite so lucky. His front legs were gone. Lucky was rushed to the animal hospital, where he was patched up and given medication for … Continue reading

Ice Cream Can Eat Your Brain

It sounds like a horror movie: you move carefully through a dark kitchen until you reach your goal. The light from the freezer blinds you for a moment! The last thing you see is the ice cream carton, grown ten times its original size, opening a gaping, sharp-toothed mouth to take a bite out of you. Ice cream can’t REALLY eat your brain. But researchers from the UT Southwest Medical Center in Dallas, Texas found a particular fat in ice cream (and other foods) can get into your head and mess with your appetite. Palmitic acid — a fat found … Continue reading

Dear Diary: I Am Hungry

I woke up this morning and felt the rumble in my stomach. I got out of bed and stumbled to the shower. I was hoping that the awful feeling would go away. As I got washed and dressed the emptiness in the pit of my stomach grew more fierce. I counted out five crackers. Having been a dieter for several years I did not have to look at the package to see how many calories there were or even the portion size that they recommended. I have experience. The crackers took my emptiness away and I am now good to … Continue reading

A Beginner Again

Lately, a lot of things have conspired to have me looking back over the last ten years. I graduated from college in 1999, and that’s a pretty big milestone! It’s had me thinking about all the things I’ve done in ten years — lived in four different states, gained weight and lost weight, got into shape and got out of shape… you get the idea. Now, at thirty-two, I feel like I’m a beginner again. I recently had the opportunity to take part in an activity I ADORED ten years ago, and it really hit home how much older I … Continue reading

Treating Chin Acne in Pets

Don’t stress too much if your pet develops chin acne — it’s a relatively common problem in dogs and cats! One of the most common causes for chin acne is allergies. A pet may be allergic to fleas, foods, plastic in bowls, or inhaled particles like pollen and mold spores. Dealing with the allergy can make a big difference in many cases of chin acne. Treat your pet with a monthly flea/tick preventative like Frontline, Advantage, Sentinel, or Revolution. Spray your home and yard to clear up flea infestations if one is present or suspected. Eliminate plastic food and water … Continue reading

Thinking about Cravings

I just sat down and ate a bag of reduced-fat microwave popcorn with Magic Shell chocolate syrup on top. It’s not as gross as it sounds, really! (I like salty and sweet together.) That snack was my compromise. What I REALLY wanted was to head to Cold Stone Creamery and get a crazy ice cream concoction. My sweet tooth was in overdrive, and I had to do something. The choco-popcorn satisfied the craving without making me feel too guilty about eating something bad for me. According to a study from Tufts University, most women experience strong cravings — more than … Continue reading

I Want to Know How to Keep the Weight Off

I asked and you answered. Today, we’re going to talk about keeping the weight off. In the world of fitness this is called “maintenance” – much like your car – you have to keep up your regular maintenance or you’re going to have problems. Sticking with the car analogy for the moment, let’s say that your car breaks down on the side of the road and you take it to a mechanic. The mechanic looks over the car, runs some diagnostics and fixes you up. Then he tells you that you need to get regular oil changes and tune-ups. Ideally, … Continue reading
