Speed Cleaning

Have you ever received that last minute call, “Guess who’s coming over for dinner tonight honey?”  Or you suddenly remembered that so-and-so was stopping by to go over notes for an upcoming meeting. Maybe you have family coming by but you got lost in a good book.  Suddenly you look at the clock and realize you have an hour before they arrive. All of these scenarios can leave anyone feeling overwhelmed and unprepared.  But this is where speed cleaning comes in. Speed cleaning requires fast movement.  In fact, you need to set a timer so that you have a deadline … Continue reading

Dump the Storage Unit and Get Out of Debt

According to the New York Times, the number of self-storage units in the United States is on the rise. Unfortunately, most people really don’t need self-storage units. They are usually a waste of money and can contribute to debt. Dumping the storage unit can offer you instant savings. There are very few smart reasons to have a storage unit, and the majority of these require only temporary storage. For example, if a family is moving to a new home and is temporarily renting a furnished apartment while they wait to close on the new house. Renting a self-storage unit year … Continue reading

Combating Cardio Obstacles

I will admit that I don’t particularly enjoy a cardio workout. I prefer standing still movements, like plies or on the floor exercises. The truth is that I’m not a fan of intense (or even moderate) movement. But I force myself to do it (although, not as much as I should). The reason is because cardio has so many benefits. First of all, it helps with weight loss. It gives you more energy and can reduce stress levels. But it also has tremendous health benefits, such as reducing your risk of chronic diseases. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that … Continue reading

Mobile Baby

My daughter has entered a new phase of her life in the last few weeks. Gone are the days of sitting in one place, there is a whole new world for her to explore. The transition from immobile to mobile began when my daughter started to insist on laying on the floor. She did not want to be held and she did not want to sit in any kind of chair. At first she was perfectly content to grab on to her toes and put them into her mouth. With several colorful toys in her reach, she started kicking in … Continue reading

Tackling Those Unseen Areas

In my last blog I asked what type of housekeeper you are. I confessed that I was the type who keeps up appearances but has hidden messes. I also talked about finally tackling those unseen areas. So where do we start? We start by writing a list (if you read enough of my housekeeping blogs, you know how I love lists). Take some time to write down every drawer, cabinet and closet that you want to tackle. Go through each room in your mind. You might even have other areas like trunks or shelves that need to be cleaned out. … Continue reading

Sleep Deficit Very Disruptive for Kids with ADHD

Researchers have discovered that even a moderate sleep deficit has a big affect on the neurobehavioral functioning of children who have ADHD. This appears to have a direct, and negative, impact on how kids with ADHD are able to function in school. The implication is that if extra efforts are made to ensure that the child gets enough sleep every night, that this will improve his or her school experience. I think everyone knows what it feels like to have to go through a day after not getting enough sleep. This tends to make people feel lethargic, and unmotivated, and … Continue reading

End of an Era

My daughter is a visual learner. She thrives on using colorful visual aids to help retain information or to serve as a clear reminder of lessons or events. Hence our success using a reward chart. When my daughter was three years old I invested in a reward chart and promptly hung it in the hallway where no one, especially my young offspring, could miss it. Whereas, some parents use the chart to curb negative behavior, I wanted a visual tool to encourage my daughter to exercise good behavior while completing a list of daily activities. The chart included a list … Continue reading

First Match Meeting

We went to our very first match meeting on Friday. This was for match #2. We met with the adoption recruiter, along with the child’s case worker and guardian. We also heard briefly from the girl’s current foster mom, who called in for the meeting. I have to admit, I am really hopeful. I just love this girl already, and I think it’s because she is a lot like me. She has been through a lot, she has trust issues, she is scared to get close to anyone, and all that is understandable. But, she is also motivated and determined, … Continue reading

How to Get Rid of Your Old Stuff

We have an entertainment unit sitting in our living room right now. In itself, this is not odd. However, this entertainment unit is sitting backwards in front of our fireplace. The poor thing has officially been declared surplus furniture, and I want it out. Entertainment units are notoriously difficult items to get rid of. However, I am the getting-rid-of queen, so we shall see how things go. I may offer someone an entertainment unit and $25 if the going gets tough and the unit stays put. If you need to get rid of old stuff, how do you do it? … Continue reading
