For a Good Marriage, Avoid the Story Telling

Your mother-in-law made a nasty comment and your husband didn’t step in to say something. Or, he forgot to fix the garage door again. You are just so annoyed. So when your best friend calls, you are ready to vent. But when venting turns into story telling, you may be harming your marriage. Here is why. We all tend to do it. You start out complaining about one thing, and before you know it, the story has evolved with details about every single way that your spouse needs to step up and change. Soon a long list of faults emerges … Continue reading

How Big Are Your Sins?

I think I can safely say that all of us, at one time or another, having rated our sins on a scale of 1-10, or categorized them into “big” and “little.” We might not ever do the really “big” sins, you know – adultery, murder, and all that, but we do have plenty of favorite “little” ones – gossip, being judgmental, telling an occasional white lie. Because we don’t commit the “big” sins, we tell ourselves that we’re doing well. But we run into a problem when we grade our sins. If we take stock and decide that all our … Continue reading

4 Things You Probably Shouldn’t Talk About at Work

I realize that every office is different and some are more casual than others. However, every job that you ever have should be viewed, at the very least, as a networking opportunity, if not a rung in the ladder. Perhaps you have landed your dream job and have no intentions of ever advancing–but that doesn’t mean that a professional reputation isn’t something to strive for. With that said, here are a few things that are better left discussed after office hours. Other People Nothing speaks more poorly about you than when you dish the goods on someone else. Yet, almost … Continue reading

Cash Concert Canned and “Stanford” Dishes on “Sex”

On January 13, 1968, Johnny Cash performed a legendary concert at the Folsom State Prison. Cash himself was no stranger to run-ins with the law. But, despite his image, Cash was never sentenced to prison. He did go to jail seven times, but only spent one night each stay. However, his Folsom Prison concert helped give him the “outlaw” image and was a breakthrough performance that became a well-liked live album. To make the 40th anniversary of that memorable concert, there was tribute concert planned, but those plans have now been scrapped. Who decided to cancel the concert? Well, that … Continue reading

Gossip—Is it Good or Bad for Business?

I am philosophically opposed to gossip, but as a flawed human, and a writer at that—I just can’t seem to stay away from observations and stories about people. Even at the ripe old age of forty, I have not quite mastered when it is “good” gossip and when it is not and recently I was talking with a colleague about how to keep gossip under control and figure out what and how it is best for a small business… It is so tempting and interesting to talk about people! It can also help us build alliances with some people even … Continue reading

Do You Follow Your Own Rules?

How often do you violate our own rules and then wonder why our kids have a hard time following the rules you set? As parents, we sometimes have the attitude that we don’t have to follow our own rules. However, when we do, we send the wrong message to our kids. If we take a lackadaisical attitude toward rules, then our kids won’t feel the need to follow these same rules. Sometimes we violate the rules without even thinking about it or we figure our kids aren’t really paying attention but, let’s face it, our kids watch our every move. … Continue reading

What Are You Teaching Your Kids About Gossip?

Ah…we try so hard as parents and watch our Ps and Qs—we strive to set a good example and be good role models for our children…but what about when it comes to gossip? Do our children hear us chatting away on the phone or on the sidelines at the soccer games—talking about neighbors, teachers, other parents, or anyone else? What are we teaching our children about gossip when they hear the things that we talk about with our grown-up friends? Of course we’re not perfect! And I have a very good friend who admits that gossip is really her biggest … Continue reading
