Power Struggles

I’m not sure who is more stubborn, me or my three year old. Some days I’m about ready to rip my hair out. We’ve all been there. You’re sitting at the dinner table trying to get your child to eat their vegetables when you hear the dreaded words, “You can’t make me!” Immediately you feel that sense of frustration start to build, the angrier you get, the more your child digs in their heels, and the power struggle ensues. Unfortunately, your child is right, you can’t actually force the vegetables down their throat, but you can enforce consequences for it. … Continue reading

Fathers & Food

Most of us have some memories of our mothers making and serving delicious foods, some every day, some just on the holidays. I grew up a very hungry person, well able to consume large pizzas in a single sitting. So I have compassion for hungry children. My wife was in an exciting, entertaining, and not a fun car accident, and while she recovers, I get to cook most of the household foods. There are some downsides to that. While I like quality, tasty foods, I get so hungry that don’t care, as long as it is healthy enough, rather than … Continue reading

Making Dinnertime Fun

Is there a way to make dinnertime fun? This is the question that races through the mind of every homemaker at least once in a while. I can’t say that I’m an expert, but I do have some ideas that might be of use. 1. Try new recipes, and let your family judge them on a scale of one to ten. This encourages even picky eaters to at least try the dish, because they can’t cast a vote until they have tasted it. Every dish that scores over an average of eight goes in your recipe binder, and everything that … Continue reading

The Baby Food Diet?

Have you heard of the baby food diet? I was reading about it this afternoon and one writer’s experience with testing it out for one week. He lost 6 pounds eating just baby food and one adult-size meal per day. I think you’d have to be pretty desperate to lose weight to try this diet. I have had my fair share of baby food and I can’t imagine eating so blandly for a week. I always made a point to taste test everything before giving it to my son when he was eating purees. I didn’t want to give him … Continue reading

Do Your Kids Hate to Eat Vegetables?

Many children dislike vegetables, and will resist eating them. The television show Nightline might be able to help you get your kids to eat vegetables! There are many theories about why a child decides not to eat his or her vegetables. Some children are picky eaters, and have a long list of foods that they will not eat. This list, of course, includes vegetables. I read somewhere a theory about why so many children refuse to eat their vegetables. Many vegetables, (including spinach and broccoli), have a bitter taste. While adults have fully developed taste buds, children are still physically … Continue reading

Save money at the buffet

Buffets are a great choice if you would like to take the whole family out to dinner, but don’t want to spend a fortune to do it. There may be a buffet restaurant called either Hometown Buffet , Country Buffet, or Old Country Buffet located near where you live. The restaurant goes by different names, depending on what part of the United States it is located in. You can count on finding the same kinds of family friendly food at all of these restaurants. There is a search engine on their website to help you find the buffet that is … Continue reading

The Dogs at the Party

If you caught yesterday’s blog about fireworks, you may remember that Moose and Lally were invited to attend a barbeque with me. I wasn’t sure if I should bring them, but in the end, since I was going to be out of the house for more than eight hours, I let the pups tag along. They’re good car riders. Moose flopped out on the back seat of my station wagon; Lally rode half the time in the passenger seat next to me and half the time in the way-back of the wagon. I was the one who had trouble — … Continue reading

Is There a Meal Where they are Pickier?

Picky eaters and battling with finicky children during meal time may seem to be family ritual for some families. In trying to figure out what is going on and why, it might help to look for clues. For example, do you have a child who is only picky at a particular meal or time of day? It might be about the types of food you are offering or some other reality of that time of day. I have known children who had a hard time at breakfast and it was because of breakfast food. As a matter of fact, when … Continue reading

Food as Fun or Function?

While we have an entire blog dedicated to FOOD here at Families.com, I know for a fact that food and nutrition is such a huge parenting issue. So many families wrestle with picky eaters, meal times, and how to make food and family fit together better. I was talking with a parent recently who was having some struggles and couldn’t understand why since the family focus was purely on food as fuel—it was all about nutrition and building strong “body machines.” I couldn’t help but think that maybe a little more fun might make things go smoother… We bring with … Continue reading

Two Tricks for Feeding Solids to Twins

This is not really a blog on the what, and when of starting solid foods. I’ve written several articles on starting solids with babies and I’ve linked them below. That aspect of starting solids is no different than starting with a singleton. However, when you have twins, you quickly learn that you need an extra set of hands that are frequently not available. You need one hand to feed one infant, another hand to feed the other, and a third hand to wipe up the ensuing messes. Since I have yet to meet a three handed woman, I thought I’d … Continue reading
