Why We Should Love the ‘Breastfeeding Nazis’

I know plenty of people who have bad experiences with La Leche League and plenty of people who label them as a group of breastfeeding Nazis. I myself have not had good experiences with our local LLL group. I found them overly pushy (even for someone like me who clearly advocates breastfeeding) when I had to give my twins one bottle a day during their first few weeks of their lives. But I recognized that this was one group of women and not a single one of them had multiples. . .so I simply ignored them. Many women feel like … Continue reading

Babies Are Born to Be Breastfed

This isn’t my title, but rather the title of a campaign targeting families in upstate New York. The message is clear: formula is unnatural and breast milk is the healthiest way to go when it comes to feeding your infant. And apparently it’s working: 69% of men and 46% of women say they would feel comfortable breastfeeding (or having their partner breastfeed) in public. That’s up from 54% and 35% respectively before the campaign was out. I have written about the debate in our forums before over whether or not formula cans should contain warning labels. My opinion is in … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Breastfeeding and Bonding

Question: I’m tired of hearing breastfeeding advocates say that breastfeeding promotes bonding. I mean, am I really messing up bonding with my baby if I bottle feed? What’s the big deal? To answer this question, you have to understand the mechanisms by which someone makes a statement like that. The short answer is yes, breastfeeding really has a monumental effect on bonding with your infant. The other short answer is no, if you don’t breastfeed, you baby will not likely experience attachment and psychological issues for the rest of his life. What Are We Really Saying About Bonding? Let’s first … Continue reading

The Breastfeeding Mafia is Starving Babies

Or is it just a lack of common sense? This week in the United Kingdom, powerful organizations like La Leche League, Unicef and the National Childbirth Trust in conjunction with the Department of Health are trying to get the message out that Breast is Best. But apparently not everyone thinks that this is such a good thing. Enter Sarah Oliver, a new mom who nearly starved her baby because she felt like she was consistently ‘bullied’ into breastfeeding. Advised by midwives that even one bottle would permanently hamper the breastfeeding process. . .she continued to breastfeed and by the time … Continue reading

Hospital Staff Bullies vs. Parental Rights Part 2

I left off last time sharing our story of the birth of our 3rd daughter. You may remember that I’ve written about her before. . .but I’ll get to that. If you haven’t read the first blog, I suggest you do so as it will help you understand this one a little better. The Strenuous Job of the Nursing Staff Nursing is a tough job. I’m sure it’s harder in an inner city hospital. However, bringing a baby back to a mother or notifying her that her baby is hungry is not optional depending on how busy it is. Giving … Continue reading

Is Your Baby Bottle Safe–UPDATE

A while ago, I had written a blog about the plastic being used in most brands of baby bottles. You can read the full blog here, but the summary is that the most popular brands of baby bottles are being made with bisphenol A (BPA) in the plastic. A study was done and researchers found that an unsafe amount of BPA leaked into the contents of the bottle after several uses. Now I have some good news! Whole Foods now sells Born Free baby bottles, a brand that is deemed “safer” because it is biphenyl A Free. You may thought … Continue reading

Is Your Baby’s Bottle Safe?

It has long been agreed upon by scientists that breastfeeding is the way to go when it comes to feeding your baby. Breastfeeding has been linked statistically to numerous health benefits including making your baby smarter, being developmentally advanced, reduced allergies, reduced risk of cancer and just about everything else under the sun that could be healthy and good for your baby. While formula cannot come close to mimicking breast milk perhaps another variable in the “breast is better” statistics is that hard plastic bottles have now been found to leak a dangerous chemical into the bottle’s liquid. An independent … Continue reading

Breastfeeding Moms May Need More Calcium

If you’re breastfeeding, you may have read through a sea of information that suggests you should eat this or shouldn’t eat that. One thing that I had always heard was about how lactating moms should go easy on the milk and dairy products. . .especially if their babies were fussy. Certainly a very fussy baby of a breastfeeding mother warrants a good look at mom’s diet. However, there is in truth, very little that a breastfeeding mom can’t eat. A new study however, suggests that breastfeeding moms should increase their calcium intake. The study was done with rats and compared … Continue reading

From the Forums: What Exactly Is in Formula Anyways?

‘From the Forums’ is a new feature I would like to introduce to the baby blog. My purpose? To get baby blog readers into the forums and forum participants reading our blogs. Every blog in the ‘from the forums’ series will address an issue brought up in the forums and will link to that forum for further discussion. Likewise, the forum in question, will have a link to the appropriate blog. Our first topic is what exactly is in formula. As you likely are aware there are a variety of formulas to choose from. Some babies seem to care less … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Are You Anti-Formula?

Someone sent me a private message saying, “I noticed that you only write articles about breastfeeding. Why don’t you write anything about formula? Are you anti-formula? I figured that if one person had this question, perhaps more of our baby readers did as well. I will start by saying that I am absolutely, 100% NOT against formula. It provides a needed alternative to moms who can’t or shouldn’t breastfeed and I do recognize that. So why do I write all of the breastfeeding articles? Reason #1 Most of the articles I write for baby are on the topics of multiples … Continue reading
