Oh Baby, Baby!

Twins! One of the moms from my scrapbooking group recently gave birth to healthy twin girls. I finally got to meet them last week. They are much tinier than I had anticipated, but are still cute as can be. Despite being overwhelmed by the constant feedings and diaper changing, the twins’ mom is doing something I would never consider attempting three weeks post partum: She’s piecing together the twins’ first scrapbook. She received a ton of baby-themed scrapbooking supplies during her shower, but I didn’t think she would get crafting so soon after giving birth. Apparently, she doesn’t want to … Continue reading

How to Save on Costume Layouts

Happy Halloween! It’s T-minus 6 hours until the ghouls, goblins and ghosts are unleashed around the neighborhood. Snap-happy parents will be taking aim at their little monsters as they collect candy from friends, neighbors and virtual strangers. Then, it’ll be time to unload the loot and get sugared up. While my daughter devours her share of sugar, I’ll be going through my freshly snapped photos to see which will make the cut for my annual Halloween-themed scrapbook layout. Last Friday, I paid a visit to my local scrapbook shop to see if the manager had marked down some of the … Continue reading

Make Mine a Mini

When you are looking for a quick and easy scrapbook gift to give a loved one, why not make it a mini. Don’t let their small size fool you; mini memory albums can be just as pretty or provocative as their full-sized counterparts, though they don’t take near as much time or money to create. My first foray into mini scrapbooking came when I inherited a detailed kit from a fellow scrapper who was cleaning out her craft closet. You can purchase the pre-packaged kits from scrapbook supply shops or craft stores, such as Hobby Lobby or Michaels. My kit … Continue reading

Untraditional Scrapbooks

You may feel as though you’ve seen just about every themed scrapbook imaginable, but when it comes to album sizes, you haven’t seen unique until you’ve laid your eyes on a scrapbook made from a standard Rolodex. Yes, a Rolodex. Who knew the plastic filing device, which holds index cards and spins for convenience, could be transformed into a place to keep your treasured memories? I got my first taste of the Rolodex scrapbook during a workshop I attended just after Labor Day. The seminar was designed to get avid crafters to experiment with untraditional means of scrapbooking. Rather than … Continue reading

Words to Live By

Oprah Winfrey once said: “Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.” I’m pretty sure she was looking at her BFF Gayle King when she uttered those now famous words. Then again, perhaps, she was looking directly into the camera while Gayle giggled on the side. Regardless, no truer words have been said, which is why my own BFF included the quote in the “Friends Forever” scrapbook she presented to me the day I left for college. Another one … Continue reading

Border Patrol

When it comes to creating visually appealing page borders for scrapbook layouts, nothing beats free. Earlier this year I got hooked on rubber stamps. During that time I used just about every stamp set available to design eye-popping page borders and photo frames. Now, I am all stamped out. Whereas I considered seguing to stickers, my friend had an even better idea—-free printable borders. I’ve known for quite some time that you could print out free scrapbook borders online, but up until now I hadn’t really explored the option. Much to my surprise the Internet is an amazing venue for … Continue reading

Post Mother’s Day Scrapbooking

If you failed to create the perfect Mother’s Day scrapbook to give as a gift on Sunday, now is your chance to make amends. Rather than waiting an entire year to put together a memory album filled with snapshots you took yesterday during your Mother’s Day celebrations, consider printing your images right away and crafting a book by the end of the week. Mother’s Day scrapbooks don’t have to be elaborate. Instead, keep the layouts simple by focusing on the fun mom and the rest of the clan had while celebrating the special occasion. For example, if you spent Mother’s … Continue reading

Add Pizzazz to Plain Paper

Looking to add some pizzazz to your layouts? Typically, when I think of jazzing up an ordinary scrapbook page design I turn to stickers or stamps; however, during a recent scrapbook workshop I learned how to design pretty paper at home. Instead of relying on store-bought brands, I scanned some photos and used them as the background for my own design. If you don’t want to use photographs, you could opt to scan clip art. Regardless of the image you choose, you’ll have to work with photo software or an imaging package to tile the artwork or enlarge it, so … Continue reading

Work Those Words

Each month my local scrapbook shop sponsors a display which customers can win by entering their names in a little box. This month, in honor of spring break, the display features a bunch of Disney-related books and embellishments. Needless to say, even if you aren’t planning a spring break vacation to the Magic Kingdom, the contest is still worth entering, as you could easily use the Disney accessories to spice up a baby scrapbook or hold on to the items and use them when you eventually take a trip to a Disney theme park. We don’t plan to visit Disney … Continue reading

Spring Into Spring

Have a spring fling with your scrapbooking supplies. Now is the perfect time to deep clean your scrapbook workspace and put leftover embellishments to good use. Spring is traditionally a time for new beginnings, so why not breathe new life into existing supplies to celebrate the first season of the year? Here are some ideas to get you started: If you are looking to add a punch of color to your spring-theme scrapbook layouts, consider placing flowers on the page. You can do this with existing stamps or die cuts. Or press some small fresh flowers and add them to … Continue reading
