Typical High School Course of Study: Science

Some school districts require students to complete four years of science; some require them to complete only three. Students have already been introduced to most of these concepts in their middle school years, but in highschool they would explore them in greater depth. The basic curriculum for science in high school is as follows. In the 9th grade, a basic science curriculum focuses primarily on earth science, and molecules. Topics would include the earth’s history, earth science, ecology and environment. They would learn about weather and climate, air and air pressure, air masses and air fronts. Water and its uses, … Continue reading

Typical High School Course of Study: Language Arts Part 2

Four years of language arts classes are required to complete high school. There really is not much variety in the language arts choices, as you need to show that you took 9th grade, 10th grade, 11th grade, and 12th grade language arts to show you have earned a “diploma”. Of course, classes can be taken at a general or advanced level, and also at community college or AP levels as well. In part 1, I have given 9th and 10th grade language arts requirements. In part 2, I will give 11th and 12 grade basics. Eleventh grade language arts curriculum … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 15:7-11

Nephi has just come down the mountain from his vision of the latter days, and is met by his unbelieving brothers. Filled with the Spirit, he’s in the perfect mindset to teach his brothers the things they need to know, but he finds them unreceptive, which concerns him greatly. 7. And they said: Behold, we cannot understand the words which our father hath spoken concerning the natural branches of the olive-tree, and also concerning the Gentiles. 8. And I said unto them: Have ye inquired of the Lord? Nephi knows from personal experience that the Lord is the source of … Continue reading

Are Your Kids Getting Enough Nature?

I think that we modern Westerners might be nature-deprived. Many of us live in cities and we go from our cozy and comfy homes, to our cars, into work or school, and then back home again. When my children were younger, they didn’t even get to go outside when the weather was poor so there were some days when they might not have gone outside at all if I didn’t intervene, let alone getting out into what might be considered “nature.” When was the last time your child played along a stream or threw rocks into a river? Walked through … Continue reading

Study the Articles of Faith

Do you know the Articles of Faith? In Primary we are encouraged to memorize the Articles of Faith in order to learn the Faith in God awards. Although I did memorize each Article of Faith when I was a child, I feel that I failed to grasp the entire meaning of these powerful statements. I didn’t appreciate that they answered questions that so many people struggle with nor did I fully understand what each one meant. As an adult I have met so many people that have struggled with various aspects of Christianity. One common area is the nature of … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 5:16-22

Lehi finally has the brass plates and is delighted to discover not only the words of the prophets written on them, but his genealogy as well. 16. And thus my father, Lehi, did discover the genealogy of his fathers. And Laban also was a descendant of Joseph, wherefore he and his fathers had kept the records. 17. And now when my father saw all these things, he was filled with the Spirit, and began to prophesy concerning his seed— 18. That these plates of brass should go forth unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people who were of his seed. … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 4:1-11

Laman and Lemuel have just been visited by an angel, who has commanded them to stop beating Nephi and Sam, and to listen to the things Nephi is telling them, for someday Nephi will be a ruler over them. As we head into chapter four, Nephi is telling his brothers why he feels it is so important for them to honor their father’s wishes in obtaining the brass plates from Laban. 1. And it came to pass that I spake unto my brethren, saying: Let us go up again unto Jerusalem, and let us be faithful in keeping the commandments … Continue reading

Prince to Tour London then Study the Bible

His name once seemed almost synonymous with the word “sex,” but now Prince has other things on his mind. He plans to play twenty one concert dates in London starting August 1st of this year and will then take time off to study the Bible. Over his career, Prince has sold approximately 80 million albums. Hits like “When Doves Cry,” “Little Red Corvette,” and “1999” have made him a household name in the 80s. But now it seems that as he closes in on age 50, Prince has things more spiritual in nature on his mind. Prince said that he … Continue reading

The Joy of the Unpredictable Nature Walk

Nature walks are a grand, old standby when it comes to great family activities and things to do with children of all ages. Even in snowy, cold or wet weather, getting out of the house for a brief nature walk can put a new spin on a day that seems to be deteriorating quickly. Nature walks provide exercise, a change of venue, and some great science lessons all just by putting on some good walking shoes and heading out the front door! One of the main delights of a nature walk is the unpredictability of it. You never know what … Continue reading

Nature Study in the Dead of Winter

We did a little impromptu nature study yesterday. Temperatures have been in the single digits here in our corner of the world, so we managed to squeeze in this nature study without spending time outdoors. Although I’m a fan of Charlotte Mason methods, I have to confess that I’m not dedicated enough to her philosophy (that children should get outdoors every, single day) to actually go for a nature walk when it’s five degrees outside. (I like to remind myself that Miss Mason lived in England, rather than in the frigid American Midwest, and that even she would nod in … Continue reading
