Get Better Cable Rates

I love television. I don’t think I’ve made my TV adoration much of a secret. We’re in a small lull before fall programming starts. The DVR catches only one show on Monday and nothing on Tuesday. It probably wonders why it’s getting a break. We’ve had a lot of different programming providers over the years. Our current house is out in the country. We don’t have a lot of options to be able to watch TV. We originally went with Dish, but after having a big issue we switched to DirecTV. We would love to be able to go back … Continue reading

Power Hog in Your House

I don’t pay our electric bill, so I don’t have to be horrified when I open the envelope. Electricity is deregulated in Texas and we pay some of the highest per kilowatt hour fees in the nation. Electric companies here are constantly advertising and vying for business by claiming they can save you the most money. I wonder how much money the companies could save their customers if they dropped the advertising. We do not have any choices for electricity where we live. Our only option is the co-op that services our area. I do believe we’re paying less for … Continue reading

Two Ways To Save On Entertainment

When it comes to finding things to trim in the family budget, entertainment is an area where many people could probably make a few cuts. Unfortunately, the very idea of scrutinizing your family’s entertainment budget may be very unappealing when you consider the people in your household that may be very attached to their entertainment of choice, be it television, video games, or movie rentals. That said, there are a couple of options that you could consider if you are thinking about how to save money on television. The first option is the most obvious – go without television. No, … Continue reading

Switching to a Single Income – Tips for Saving Money

For many families, deciding to have one parent stay home with the new baby is a difficult choice, and it’s even harder to carry out. It means making tough sacrifices. It’s interesting how many families say “we can’t,” when in reality what they are really saying is, “we won’t.” Are you willing to give up a few of life’s conveniences to stay home with your child? Sometimes, the first step toward being able to afford staying home with your kids is honestly dividing your expenses into two categories: needs and wants. Sometimes, the only way to live on one income … Continue reading

Sesame Street Lends a Hand to Cash-Strapped Parents

My preschooler loves watching Sesame Street, but honestly, the summer reruns are killing me. Seriously, if I have to hear Telly Monster lament about his missing triangle one more time I may reconsider Dish Network’s recent offer to hook me up with cheap satellite TV. Fortunately, I may not have to dig deep to preserve my sanity. Yesterday, the folks who produce Sesame Street announced that new episodes of the Emmy Award-winning children’s show will begin airing next month. What’s more, the new season includes a special show dedicated to the economy. If you haven’t already discussed the current financial … Continue reading

An Incredible Travel Deal with a Crazy Catch

Imagine taking a family vacation to a luxury resort in sunny San Diego, which boasts three gloriously gigantic pools, a sensational spa and a phenomenal golf course, all for the jaw-dropping, mind-blowing, dirt cheap price of $19 a night. Did I also mention that the same room typically sells for $200 per night? Sound too good to be true? Well, it isn’t. Business is slow at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, so from August 16 to 31, you can sun in style at the ultra-luxe property. Okay, okay, there is a catch. The hotel’s “Survivor Package” does come with a few … Continue reading

Practicing Yoga at Home

Often people new to yoga benefit from the advise and presence of a trained yoga instructor. This really is the best way to be introduced to the practice and be sure you are performing the asanas correctly. However, a yoga class isn’t possible for everyone. Some don’t have a studio or gym offering yoga close to home and others just can’t spare the cash for classes. The lack of access or funds doesn’t exclude you from the practice of yoga. Practicing yoga at home is possible, if you use a few precautions and start with the right materials. There are … Continue reading

Quickly Becoming Obsolete – Part 4

This is my final blog about formerly common things that you may not be able to find anymore! Honey Bees That is right, Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) has spread across the U.S. and Europe lately and is wiping out the honey bees. Between 50 and 90% of the colonies of many beekeepers has been wiped out. Some are blaming CCD on climate change, some blame it on a virus, and even others think it may have something to do with beekeeping practices. I guess until the real cause is known, the honeybee will remain in danger. Printed Newspapers, magazines, and … Continue reading

Gas and Go… or Not

Okay, now I’ve heard everything… With the price for a single gallon of unleaded gas well over the $4 mark in most parts of the nation it’s no wonder motorists are getting creative when it comes to filling up at the pump. For instance, a guy in Denver recently gave new meaning to “squeezing every penny at the pump.” Get this: according to news reports, clerks at a gas station just outside the Mile High City actually called the police when a man came in and insisted on using $10 worth of pennies to prepay for his fuel. Responding officers … Continue reading
