Anniversary of the Amish School Shooting

Just two years ago today, the country watched in horror as it was reported that a lone gunman infiltrated a one-room Amish schoolhouse and went on a massacre that left five girls dead and five others wounded. During the attack, the boys were sent out of the school, leaving the girls behind with the gunman, who after the attack, killed himself. The quiet town of Nickle Mines, Pa is a place of lots of pasture. On any given weekday, you will usually find various Amish folks mowing their lawns with rotary cutters, working in the fields, hanging laundry out to … Continue reading

Virginia Tech Shooting Anniversary

I am sure that we all can remember the devastation that took place at the Virginia Tech campus. It was one of the worst shootings in all of school and university history. If the story did not touch your life in some way personally, many of you were touched through the news reporting and media. The school suffered great sadness and loss after the shootings. Many were criticized and feelings raged high. Still today families and school administrators are trying to cope with and make sense of the happenings that took place on that day. Today, here we are one … Continue reading

Tips for Shooting Soccer Games

I recently received a note from a reader asking me for tips on how to capture “decent” pictures of her son during his soccer games. Why settle for “decent?” You can capture truly frameworthy sports photos if you practice a few simple techniques. Position. I dated a soccer player in high school and actually have experience shooting many action packed games. My first recommendation is to get off the bleachers and situate yourself near the goal at the end of the field. That way you can shoot up the field, rather than from the sidelines. What’s more, the end of … Continue reading

Parents of Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale and Corbin Bleu fans brace yourselves… it appears the popular kids from Disney’s “High School Musical” series aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. “High School Musical 3” hasn’t even started shooting (filming begins in two weeks in Utah and it’ll be in movie theaters in the fall) and the folks at Disney are already working on “High School Musical 4.” According to Disney execs, the script for “High School Musical 4” is in the process of being inked and as it stands now the project will likely be a TV movie unlike “High … Continue reading

Rocker Forces Daughter to Stay in School

FINALLY, a celebrity parent I can relate to… Rocker Lenny Kravitz has put his foot down. He says he is adamant his teenage daughter Zoe will remain in school no matter what. And right now that “what” refers to the lure of a successful movie career. The 19-year-old has all ready appeared alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones in “No Reservations” and Jodie Foster in crime drama “The Brave One,” and says she would love to continue shooting more films. However, her dad has other ideas. Kravitz is insisting that Zoe (whose mother is actress and former “Cosby Show” star Lisa Bonet) graduate … Continue reading

The Truth about School Bus Drivers

In my previous article I discussed the importance of school support staff. I also talked about how these people were often misunderstood or not given the credit that they deserve. My previous article addressed educational assistants and custodians. In this article I will continue to address the support staff that help to make a school successful. Many think that school bus drivers do little work. They take the children to school and come pick them up in the afternoon to take them home. This is true. However it takes much more than being able to drive a bus to be … Continue reading

Ask a Homeschooling Blogger: Why Are You So Against Government Involvement Part 2

Note: As I have explained in my previous blog this morning, I have received an e-mail that I think articulates the opinions of many who do not home school and don’t understand why those of us who do might see government intervention as a bad thing. I generally ignore these letters because they are often riddled with poor language and have clearly not been thought out. For the original question in part, please see the first blog. This is a continuation of my response. Those Who “Claim to Homeschool” Every so often, we hear of a news story about a … Continue reading

14 Year Old Plotting Columbine-Like Attack Was Homeschooled

Surely you’ve read the news reports and maybe it’s just me, but the idea that this kid was home schooled sticks out like a sore thumb. How did he get all those weapons? Sure enough, as stories of the news surfaced, reactions to the stories popped up: “See, I knew there was a reason I thought home schooling was stupid.” “This kid wouldn’t have had an opportunity to do the planning and get those weapons if he were in public school. Someone would catch something.” “Plain and simple, home schooling is a bad idea. Rather than teaching kids how to … Continue reading

Can Virginia Tech Be Blamed For The School Shootings?

We all remember the horrible Virginia Tech shootings that occurred several months ago. Over thirty people, students and faculty, lost their lives. After incidents such as this, people start questioning what could have been done differently. Families of the victims look for something or someone to blame for their loss. I cannot say that I would not do the same. Late last month, a panel decided that indeed Virginia Tech could have done something differently and saved lives. It was determined that if students were notified earlier, lives would have likely been saved. From the time the first shootings happened, … Continue reading
