Making Journaling Meaningful

I recently did a layout of my daughter. The instant I saw the picture I was going to use, I knew my title, and what my journaling would say. This particular picture is of my daughter a couple of months before she turned 3. She had this look on her face that just made me ache inside with the realization that she was getting to be a “big girl”. I wanted to convey those feelings onto the layout so that one day, she could look at this page and know how I felt in that moment. My title was, “That … Continue reading

Marriage is Like the Sea- Part 2

When I told Mick about my last article he came up with a couple of extra ideas. First he said, ‘So marriage is like the sea because it’s dark and stormy?’ Just as well I know he was joking. Sadly, the reality is for some people that is exactly what it is like. Marriage is a constant battle as each one seeks to get their own way and stormy arguments result. A little bit of give and take is in order in any marriage. Then he mentioned that marriage was like the sea in that there are tides. Ebb and … Continue reading

So Your Child Wants to Stay Home Alone

If you have tweens in your family the topic of staying home without adult supervision may be one you discuss frequently. This isn’t the case in my home (yet), but deciding whether or not to allow her 10-year-old daughter to fend for herself is a hot topic at my best friend’s house. My two cents worth was a firm “no,” and my BFF agreed, but her number one child won’t let the issue go. In their case, the 10-year-old wants to be unsupervised in the afternoons during a 2-hour period between the time she gets dropped off by the school … Continue reading

Nebraska Safe Haven Law Now Applies Only to Newborns

Nebraska state legislators have changed the state’s “safe haven” law, which allowed a parent to leave a child with a hospital employee without fear of facing charges, to apply only to infants in the first month of life. Last spring, Nebraska became the last U.S. state to enact a safe haven law. These laws are intended to prevent frightened new parents from abandoning the baby in an unsafe place or from hiding and possibly killing the baby. In 49 states, the law specifies the age of the infants the law applies to. In some states the law applies to newborns … Continue reading

The Major and the Minor (1942)

After reviewing “Never Been Kissed” last week and seeing that it’s considered a remake of “The Major and the Minor,” I decided I’d better see this film too, and compare them. Well, they’re both about a girl who pretends to be younger than she is and falls in love with an older man who is her mentor. And that’s where the similarities stop. But I did enjoy “The Major and the Minor” on its own merits. Ginger Rogers stars as Susan Applegate, a young woman who has left small-town farm life to come to New York to try to start … Continue reading

Update on Dennis Quaid’s Sick Twins and Slain Pro Football Player’s Celebrity Ties

It’s been a little more than a week since the tragic news broke regarding Dennis Quaid’s newborn twins becoming the innocent victims of a preventable hospital accident. When I first blogged about Quaid’s son Thomas Boone and daughter Zoe Grace having been administered a lethal dose of the blood thinner Heparin, there was no information given as to why the babies were in the hospital to begin with. Both infants were born in good health via a surrogate mother earlier this month. Brother and sister were released a few days later, but only now is information being released as to … Continue reading

My Inner City Story: Inner City Conditions

In my last blog I talked about the teachers that tend to stay in the inner city, I started there, rather than this topic because if inner city schools are to improve, there has to be teachers willing to teach here. I noted that neither money nor other incentives are as likely to keep good teachers as are mentors. I also believe that some teachers come here not realizing what they’re getting into and thus are set up for failure. But I cannot continue to talk about my experiences here without talking about the conditions in inner city schools. They … Continue reading

Toddler Safety & Your Peace Of Mind

While you can hardly expect your toddler to take responsibility for their own safety and it is indeed the burden of the parent to provide a safe environment for their child – you can set the examples by which your child will learn about safety and keeping themselves safe as they grow and develop. As with all lessons for your children, your example is the one they will learn from the most. How you behave, maintain your home and the vigilance you keep can often mean the difference between averting disaster and serious injury for your little one. The following … Continue reading
