Goody Goody Girl Scouts

Last month my 7-year-old decided to join the Girl Scouts. Oh joy! And by joy I mean Heaven help me. I’ve got nothing against the popular youth organization that has become an institution in its own right. Girl power! However, any parent with a Daisy or Brownie knows that 97% of the work involved with being a member of such a dedicated non-profit falls onto mom or dad’s shoulders. I’m guessing more moms than dads bear the brunt of the chaperoning, fundraising, sewing badges on vests and other Brownie-related tasks, but I could be wrong… though I doubt I am. … Continue reading

Downward Spiral of a Teen Mom

Let’s face it; even if your baby daddy is not an immature douchebag and your parents haven’t kicked you to the curb for having unprotected sex, getting pregnant while you are still a teenager is not going to be problem-free. So what of the teens moms, who don’t have a network of family and friends to rely on for support? Their rainbow/unicorn/puppy dog dreams typically shatter much quicker following the birth of their babies. Just ask Amber Portwood. The Indiana mom got pregnant while she was still in high school, but instead of giving birth, completing the credits needed to … Continue reading

“Teen Mom” Star Avoids Jail

… for now. Proving that you don’t have to reach the age of maturity to become a parent, MTV “Teen Mom” star Amber Portwood is back in the headlines following her arrest for beating on her baby daddy Gary Shirley. The reality TV starlet pleaded guilty earlier this week to two counts of felony domestic battery and showed her two-year-old daughter why she shouldn’t follow in her mama’s footsteps. Thursday’s plea signified a major change in Portwood’s original argument that she was 100 percent innocent. In December, the 21-year-old mother went public decrying her arrest for assaulting Shirley, her on-again, … Continue reading

Mommy Manicures

When was the last time you received a manicure? A real manicure. Not streaks of Plum Passion painted on by your 5-year-old. I’m talking about the real deal; professional nail treatment courtesy of a hired hand. I’m pretty sure the last time I paid someone to push back my cuticles and buff my nails was the day before I got married. That was more than eight years ago. I remember thinking how nice it would be to enjoy a day at the spa following the birth of our daughter. That was more than six years ago. Back then I would … Continue reading

Scary Trends in Baby Names

Leave it to Americans to find yet another way to immortalize pregnant teens. Just when you thought paying 16 year olds cold, hard cash to allow TV cameras to follow their every move as new parents was something to cringe about, now the government reveals that the young reality TV stars have some of the hottest names in the country. According to the Social Security Administration, the stars from MTV’s mega-popular show “Teen Mom,” are among the hottest trending names in the United States. Scary! I wish I were joking, but facts are facts. The Social Security Administration just released … Continue reading

The Not-So Sexy Side of Teen Sex

You had to see this one coming. From the very first minute I saw Dr. Drew Pinksy’s new primetime HLN show last month, I knew it would be just a matter of time before his peeps from MTV would show up to chat. For the record it took exactly 29 days. The good doc had to wait less than a month to parade out the mega-popular teen moms, who went from complete obscurity to tabloid fodder after getting knocked up by their boyfriends, and letting MTV document the tumult that ensued in the series “16 and Pregnant” and the spin-off, … Continue reading

Movie Review: “Griffin and Phoenix,” 2006

Every so often, I love to curl up and watch a good movie. This afternoon, I chose “Griffin and Phoenix,” the PG-13 film starring Dermot Mulroney and Amanda Peet. It’s a very thought-provoking story about a man named Griffin who has terminal cancer, but is determined to live each day to the absolute fullest. When he meets Sarah Phoenix, he keeps his secret from her, not wanting to cast a shadow on whatever time they might have to spend together. As their relationship progresses, he learns that she has a secret of her own, and they spend the rest of … Continue reading

Television Shows: Renewed, Cancelled, and in Limbo

Are you wondering if your favorite television show is going to be renewed? Most networks still have until late May to make a final announcement of their fall lineups, but here are some of the shows we know we will or won’t see again. Some of the ABC shows that have officially been renewed are “Brothers & Sisters,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lost,” “Private Practice,” and “Ugly Betty.” There had been fear by fans that “Ugly Betty” would be cancelled after ratings dropped in season 3. NBC actually renewed “Friday Night Lights” for two more seasons, despite the fact that … Continue reading

Vampires on the Big Screen

The film Twilight, about the teen Bella Swan who finds herself in love with vampire Edward Cullen, brought in a staggering $70.6 million on it’s opening three day weekend. The success of the first of Stephenie Meyer’s books on the big screen started me to thinking of classic vampires through the years. There was the first vampire character, played by Max Schreck. Schreck was a German actor who played the lead role in Nosferatu. I’ve heard that Schreck was so convincing that some moviegoers actually thought he really was a vampire. (This image is in the public domain in the … Continue reading

Sarah Palin’s Hollywood Job Offers

If things don’t work out in the world of politics Sarah Palin can always cash in on the myriad of job offers coming her way from Hollywood. The 44-year-old Republican governor of Alaska turned vice presidential candidate has been the recipient of dozens of recent high profile job offers, including one from Playboy boss Hugh Hefner, who has repeatedly asked the mother of five (and soon-to-be grandmother) to strip naked in the famous men’s magazine. I’m pretty sure the famous hockey mom put that offer on ice… at least for now. Another offer on the table for Palin comes courtesy … Continue reading
