Natural Cleaning Products are Getting Better

All natural cleaning is really coming into it’s own. More and more people are using vinegar to clean instead of harsher chemicals, and we are talking about it, on blogs, in forums and where ever women talk about cleaning. There is a move towards products that are safer for our families and better for the environment. Heinz, who currently makes more than 7.5 million gallons of vinegar a year for American households has announced it will be making a stronger vinegar. The new product will be 20% stronger than traditional vinegar and still be safe for cooking. This move shows … Continue reading

Maybe you have seen the recent headline that women do many things better than men. Is that true? Well several studies have apparently come up with 12 things that women do better than men. Colorado Expands Its Medicaid Program

The state of Colorado is extending its Medicaid program to include coverage of some adults who do not have children. There is something in the Affordable Care Act that will offer a federal match of funding to help states cover this group. Only seven states have decided to take advantage of this provision. Medicaid is a public form of health insurance. It was designed to assist people who were very low-income and who can not afford to pay for a health insurance plan from a private insurance company. In general, the program covers children who come from low-income families, women … Continue reading

Men Exercise More Than Women

I recently read in an article that the recommended guidelines of getting in at least 30 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity at least four to five times a week is more likely to happen with men. Yes women, men are apparently doing better at meeting fitness guidelines. The importance of exercise cannot be understated. It can prevent more than just putting on extra weight. It can ward off serious health problems. One of the biggest concerns in this country is a condition called metabolic syndrome. It usually strikes individuals who are obese. It is a set … Continue reading

Do You Open Up To Your Visiting Teachers?

I went visiting teaching last night. As usual, I always feel so much better about life when I get to go visiting teaching. This month, the topic of the visiting teaching message was visiting teaching. I thought that was interesting. Yet, I have gained a testimony over the years that visiting teaching is truly important to helping us become more like Christ. The message was very similar to the article I spoke of from the March Ensign. It spoke of being the hands of the Savior and what we can do to really minister to the sisters we visit. However, … Continue reading

Bitter or Better

After a divorce it is normal to feel bitter towards your ex, but you don’t want to feel that way forever. We all know those women, who years later are still blaming their quality of life on their divorce. They sit at home feeling sorry for themselves and wishing their lives away. While it is normal to feel this way in the beginning when everything is still so fresh, you don’t want to carry that burden around with you forever. You want your children to see that even when hard things are thrown in their way, they can overcome them … Continue reading

Diamonds Do Not Equal Love

When I first started at the Marriage Blog I mentioned my feelings on diamond commercials and promised to expound on them. Given that we see many such ads this time of year, it seems like an appropriate time to make my promised follow-up. I’m not a big jewelry person so diamonds never appealed to me. That wouldn’t really be a big deal, except that for my entire life I’ve been inundated by ads and assumptions telling me the opposite. “So what?” you might wonder. Well, the media can have a much more powerful effect, subtle though it might be, on … Continue reading

This is Boys on Adolescence

Once I saw a great illustration of the difference between men and women. It was grossly simplistic, of course, but like all great illustrations, it captured the core of so many things in a single image. Actually, there were two images. The first image was of a rectangular box. It was completely covered in dials, knobs, levers, and latches. The heading on the image was “Woman.” The second image was of the same rectangular box — but with only a single on/off switch in the middle. The heading on the image was “Man.” I remember laughing out loud when I … Continue reading

Elderly Women and Retirement

Whenever I think about elderly women, of course my grandmother comes to mind. She and I were very close. I remember going up to stay with her from time to time, often for five days or a week, and enjoyed her simple, laid-back lifestyle. She canned, she gardened, she did crossword puzzles, she wrote in her journal—and she always had a cookie jar full of various home-baked treats for her grandchildren. It wasn’t until I was in my mid-teens that I realized something: Grandma didn’t have a lot of money. It wasn’t something that had ever been an issue, so … Continue reading
