Could Too Much Milk Cause Colic-Like Symptoms In Your Baby?-Part I

Although I am now breastfeeding my third child, I am just now looking into oversupply, and overactive letdown as reasons for why my baby is so fussy. I have always known that I had no problem producing enough milk for my babies. My first two kids were nice, chubby babies, and I have never been able to relate to women that don’t have enough. Although, I am fully aware that this is a real problem for many Moms. But, did you know that too much milk can also be a serious problem too? I didn’t, until recently, and honestly, it … Continue reading

Surviving Cabin Fever

That’s the view from my kitchen window. Okay, not really. Minus the whale and it comes pretty darn close. Winter in Wisconsin. Enough said. Still, weather experts keep harping on the fact that we’ve had a mild winter thus far. Of course, our neck of the woods often experiences wind chills in the -20 to -30 degree range (take note of the minus signs), so I suppose single digits, teens and 20s above zero is a virtual heat wave. But, I’m from Hawaii, so everything is relative. Regardless, when you have kids, winter can be a real drag even if … Continue reading

The Truth Behind the Smiles

How many of these photos did you get over the holidays? I received about 80… along with detailed Year in Review newsletters on fancy winter-themed stationery. Yesterday, I finally got around to putting away all those photos. Nearly seven dozen pictures of friends and family members showing off their pearly whites. As I stored the photo cards and newsletters I couldn’t help but think about how happy they all looked. Look at all those happy faces. Just so darn happy, happy, happy. Man, that’s a lot of happiness in one shot. Boy, what great lives they must lead. What happy, … Continue reading

Heat Up Your New Year’s Eve Party

Our local YMCA always hosts a huge family-friendly New Year’s Eve party on the afternoon of December 31st. This year they’re going with a Hawaiian luau theme and are encouraging guests to don flower-print shirts, hula skirts and other island-inspired getups. Activities include make paper leis, swimming in the pool, participating in coconut relays and dining on mango/pineapple skewers, as well as other tropical treats. You may not have an indoor pool to entertain your guests, but hosting a Hawaiian-themed party on New Year’s Eve is not a bad idea. Luaus are a change from the standard winter-themed bashes that … Continue reading

The High Price of Being Thankful

Tis the season for homemade turkey. If you are a parent of elementary-aged kids, then “homemade” is code for “handmade,” which basically means that the exterior of your refrigerator is coated with dozens of construction paper birds. Mine is. With 10 days and counting until Thanksgiving, my 7-year-old has already come home from school with no less than 14 handcrafted turkeys. Kind of makes me wonder how much time is allotted for arts and crafts versus reading, writing and arithmetic. Regardless, I’m happy to display my child’s feathery masterpieces. In fact, I am particularly fond of the handprint bird she … Continue reading

Enter Amtrak’s “Happy Feet Two” Sweepstakes

Are you ready for more adorable, dancing, singing, penguins? Enter the Amtrak “Happy Feet Two” Sweepstakes. You could win a trip for four to the “Happy Feet Two” premiere in Los Angeles, California. The first “Happy Feet” movie featured a cartoon penguin named Mumble. The little guy was born dancing, which made him quite different from the rest of the penguins. This is definitely a kids movie, and it involves lots of musical numbers, songs, and penguins who either sing, dance, or do both. The sequel to the “Happy Feet” is called “Happy Feet Two”, (which makes it easy to … Continue reading

Are You Ready for Some Football Fun?

High school football is a big deal in the small county in which I reside. Okay, maybe not as huge as in Texas. Last time I checked we didn’t have NBC knocking at our door to shoot Friday Night Lights II, but the sport is popular nonetheless. The new football season kicks off this Friday with major match ups at various area high schools, and of course, where there’s a game going on, there’s a tailgate party to go with it. If you are looking for simple ideas for your next home or away game, then consider these winners: Decor: … Continue reading

Disney at E3 and Other Video Games Update

A Kinect demo booth at this year’s E3 The E3 Video Game exhibition might be over now, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to stop talking about all we learned about upcoming video games. Put E3 up there for me with other conventions, like Comic Con and the D23 Expo, that I’d love to attend one day. Disney didn’t dominate E3, as the company isn’t really known for putting out much more than thrown-together movie tie-in games. Titles like “Epic Mickey” and “Kingdom Hearts” are the exceptions to the rule, though the latter doesn’t quite count because it was a … Continue reading

Do Interactive Fitness Video Games Really Work?

When I first started using Wii Fit Plus, my oldest son asked if “that thing” really works. He thought it was kind of funny and not a true way to get healthy. I was convinced only because a good friend of mine had lost weight using it (along with changing her eating habits). Since I have been using it for several months now, I can definitely say that it works. How else do you explain the weight loss and inches I have taken off…or the increased energy and flexibility I have? I have been using it during the winter months … Continue reading

The Birth of my Firstborn-Part I

I have two kids. A four year old and a two year old. Their birth stories are very different. Extremely different. One was Au Natural, although not by choice, and the other was epidural friendly. I want to share them both because I know expectant Moms love a good birth story. It’s like a battle scar that Moms have, that they want to lift up their shirt, show the stretch marks, and say, “See? I’m amazing!” Because we are. Having a baby isn’t easy, no matter what your birth story is. But, we all know it is worth it. My … Continue reading
