Insurance Industry Executives Shave Heads for Fundraiser

Most of the time, when you find a news story that describes the activities of insurance company executives, it reports upon their bad behavior. This isn’t that type of story. A group of eight insurance industry chief executives have shaved their heads to raise money for, and awareness of, childhood cancer. It is always nice to hear a story about insurance industry executives who are doing something good! It takes a bit of explaining in order to fully understand exactly what they did, why they did it, and how that came to be. AmWINS Group, Inc. is a company that … Continue reading

A Fun Idea For Your Family Holiday Gathering

Old family photos are always fun to look at. This holiday season, why not try identifying some of the unfamiliar faces that appear in your family photographs – you know, the ones that various relatives have stashed in shoe boxes in their closets. Looking at the pictures is entertaining in and of itself, but if you or other relatives are able to put names to some of the faces, those old pictures will become a clearer part of the story of your family. If you are hosting family this holiday season, why not invite your guests to bring those shoe … Continue reading

Funny Thanksgiving Layouts

Remember the Thanksgiving when Aunt Lucy made salmon instead of turkey? Okay, maybe that just happens in my family. Whether it’s being served fish instead of bird, or a pumpkin pie exploded in the kitchen, or great-grandpa fell asleep in the middle of saying grace, Thanksgiving is a hotbed for humorous scrapbook material. When you get sick of trying to figure out new and exciting ways to display photos of your family eating turkey, consider adding sidesplitting journaling supplements, funny poems or cute quips to mark the holiday. Many scrappers are afraid of adding poems to their layouts, but if … Continue reading

Halloween Fun for Genealogists

Halloween might be the holiday that fits best with the study of genealogy. Genealogists spend hours looking for information about dead ancestors. Halloween is when people dress up as ghosts, zombies, vampires, and other “dead” creatures. Genealogists who have a good sense of humor can find some really fun ways to celebrate Halloween, and genealogy, at the same time. Halloween might be the perfect holiday for genealogists to celebrate. After all, genealogy is the study of ancestors who have been dead for generations. Genealogists tend to be interested in visiting old graveyards. Many genealogists get more excited about “meeting” their … Continue reading

Hands-On Fall Travel Fun

School is back in session across the country, including for kids who don’t have to travel very far to get lessons in reading, writing and arithmetic. Yes, homeschool students are also back hitting the books this fall, though most enjoy way more field trips than students at traditional schools. In fact, the months of September and October are some of the best times for homeschool parents to take their kids to visit educational destinations. While most clans are staying put because the new academic year has just begun, homeschool students are free to tour some of the best hands-on learning … Continue reading

Fun in the Dark

Not that kind of fun… As of this writing, nearly four million residents living along the East Coast of the United States are without power right now thanks to Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene. NBC News showed families in North Carolina cooking on an open fire in their backyards because they were still without electricity more than 24 hours after Irene made landfall. Despite the fact that these particular families had no power, they seemed remarkably upbeat. One mom commented that her four children were getting a bit stir crazy minus the lack of television, video games and movies. Still, there is … Continue reading

Home Business Spotlight: Blogger

I would be remiss to look at various types of writing jobs and not address becoming a blogger. We may not think this can be a salary earner but you really can make money blogging. However at the same time we need to be realistic and understand that you won’t be able to retire early as a blogger. Most bloggers do it for free and do it for fun. We enjoy sharing with the rest of the world. This reminds me of one of my favorite movies, “Julie and Julia.” It’s the true story of a woman named Julie Powell … Continue reading

Fungus Eats A House – SafeCo Insurance Won’t Cover It

This might be the absolute strangest homeowners insurance claim that I have ever heard of! A rare form of fungus devoured a house that was located in California. The couple who owned it filed a claim to their insurance company. At first, SafeCo said they would cover it, but, after the repairs were made, SafeCo pretty much changed its mind about that. There is a strange fungus that actually can eat wood. It is called Poria incrassata, and it is triggered by water. This fungus is voracious and is quite capable of devouring an entire house a short amount of … Continue reading

Fresh, Fun Cosmetics Sales Opportunities are Available Through mark.

Today, I came a cross a home-based business opportunity that could be a lot of fun for the right person. Let me preface this by saying that I am definitely not the right person for this business opportunity, but you might be. I know that it is not a good fit for me because it involves selling cosmetics. Direct selling is certainly not my strong suit. Even though I can be quite persuasive, I prefer to direct my persuasive energies towards arguing on behalf of my clients in court or creating proposals that will win me the writing jobs that … Continue reading

Just For Fun – Your Ancestors’ Horoscopes

Some people really enjoy genealogy. Some people really enjoy astrology. If you enjoy both of these things, then you may be interested in exploring the connection between the two. There are astrologers that can analyze your ancestors if you are able to provide their birth dates. You may have one relative that for some reason really intrigues you, or maybe there is a family group that you do not know much about yet you still feel a strong connection to them. Astrology offers an opportunity to go beyond the names and dates on your pedigree chart and explore the details … Continue reading
