Charade – Gilbert Morris

Ollie Benson is a computer genius. He’s been working for years on a computer program to help people create movies at home, and as soon as he gets all the bugs worked out, he thinks it will be pretty cool. His ambitions don’t go much further than that, though – Ollie is a hundred pounds overweight and he doesn’t have very much self-esteem. He’s tried blind dating, but his appearance seems to repulse most women, and his hang-dog attitude doesn’t help, either. His program finished, he sends it off to a major software corporation and sits back to see what … Continue reading

Senility On The Rise In Dogs and Cats

Humans aren’t the only ones who have to worry about senility. Dogs and cats can suffer from cognitive dysfunction syndrome, also known as senility or dementia in humans. As dogs — and cats — live longer, owners are starting to see more issues that never used to be a problem. Why? Because the pets used to never live that long! Cats and small dogs are living to see twenty; medium and large dogs are reaching their teens. This is all thanks to improved nutrition, better veterinary care, and home environments. Recent research shows that nearly a third of dogs ages … Continue reading

Caretakers: Role Reversal

Serving as a caretaker is a difficult and often unrewarding task. But have you ever tried to put yourself in the shoes of the person you are taking care of? I haven’t. For the last two years, I have been living with my grandmother and serving as one of her primary caretakers. Since I was about eight years old, she has been living with Type 2 diabetes. Within the last few years, she’s had to start taking insulin injections to help manage her blood sugar levels. The last few years have also seen a mental decline. My grandmother has changed … Continue reading

Is it the Green Tea or the Locale?

Green tea is a wonderful drink that of late we hear a great deal about in news about health and fitness. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association states that Japanese green tea could definitely reduce the risk of heart disease. However, the study did not find any relationship between drinking green tea and reducing cancer rates. The FDA still states that they have found ‘no credible evidence’ to indicate that green tea reduces risk of heart disease. In fact, the evidence is rather sketchy other than the fact that unsweetened green tea is better for … Continue reading

Rapid Changes in Weight & Fitness May Require Therapy

I read an interesting article today that made a lot of sense to me. It discussed the fact that people who engage in intensive fitness or weight loss programs that reshape their physical bodies, may want to engage in psychotherapy in order to help reshape their mental image as well. Specifically cited were weight loss surgeries and other rapid weight loss programs, but the psychological aspect associated with building a fitness program should not be ignored. People who have a poor mental image may or may not have a poor physical body. For example, I know at least three women … Continue reading

Setting Positive Goals for Weight Loss

We’ve talked about losing the negative self-talk here. About how we need to learn to be nicer to ourselves and to think better and we also need to recognize that we aren’t perfect. Perfection is nice in theory, but if we pound ourselves into the ground with the need to be perfect, we will sabotage ourselves before we can even get started. But let’s say we let go of the perfection hang-ups and the negative self-talk – what are some other positive goals we can work towards to help our weight loss? At the top of the list should be … Continue reading

Weight Loss 101

One of the funniest things about reading weight loss articles and how to’s is the advice about whether to or not to count calories. And how does one know how many calories to eat in order to lose weight?
