Preserving Your Sanity on the Road

And they’re off! Our neighbors have officially departed on their annual summer pilgrimage to Canada to visit their family members and friends. They left about four hours ago in a Chevy Blazer filled to the gills with three kids, two adults, one Beagle and a ton of luggage, plus two well-stocked coolers and what looked like the kitchen sink. Better them than me. I’ve driven cross-country before, but never with three young kids in the backseat. Not me; I prefer to fly 5,000 miles with my infant turned chatty toddler, thank you very much. I don’t think anything properly prepares … Continue reading

No Kid Zone

If you are planning to jet off on a summer vacation with young children, then you know to be prepared for unwelcome stares and more than a few evil looks as you make your way down the airplane’s cramped aisle, right? Of course, you do. Unless you are one of those parents. You know; the clueless types that think their toddler is going to sit like an angel in his seat the entire flight without a single toy, coloring book, iPad, or bag of Cheerios to distract him from screaming his head off once he figures out that he can’t … Continue reading

Sunshine Kids Car Seats

I am kind of a car seat crazy person. I want my kids to be safe. You hear stories all the time about seats not being installed correctly, or about an accident that could have been avoided if only the child had been strapped in correctly to a car seat. So, when I had my first baby, I made sure to do my research. I found an acceptable infant car seat, but when it was time to move her up to a bigger one, I wanted one that was going to last, and one that was strong, and durable. I … Continue reading

Sorting Out Pregnancy Advice

The big problem with being pregnant is the slew of conflicting advice that comes flying in from every direction. How is a poor girl supposed to know what is true and what is not? One doctor says you’re not gaining enough weight while another says you’re gaining too much. One book says you’re not supposed to eat lunch meat and another says it’s okay if you cook it first. Some people say caffeine is okay and some people say it increases your risk for miscarriage. What is true and what is not? Whenever there is conflict about something, someone has … Continue reading

Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg

I know I promised to review “Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg” about a month ago, but it’s taken me that long to get my hands on a copy. Now I have, so I can bring the first story of Tinker Bell’s solo adventures in Neverland to you. Actually, “Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg,” the first of the children’s books Disney commissioned to kick off its Tinker Bell/Pixie line even before the home-release movies, doesn’t star Tinker Bell. Our main protagonist is newly-born Never Fairy Prilla; Tinker Bell is the most important of the secondary … Continue reading

Warm Weather Car Safety

Depending on where you live, winter can be long, depressing, and, let’s face it, cold. When warm weather arrives, many of us can hardly wait to get outside. There are parks to visit, playgrounds to explore, and beaches to comb. And yet, with all the fun surrounding warm-weather outings, some precautions need to be taken when traveling with a baby. Before you even place your child in the car, check the car seat, especially any metal buckles or other metal parts. These can get extremely hot during a warm day, especially if they are in the direct sunlight. The last … Continue reading

Are You Buckled, Miss Suitcase?

You all know how I feel about people buckling up in my car. What you may not be aware of is that I’ve been known to frequently buckle non-human items that are riding in my car. I’ll give you a couple examples. A few days ago, I was meeting some friends at the park, planning to do some walking while we were there. I always keep an umbrella stroller in the trunk of my car, but I wanted my bigger, heavier-duty one along for this particular walk. Rather than break my back trying to hoist it up and then wrestle … Continue reading

Not the Way You Want to Start Your Vacation

“Hope for the Best. Expect the worst.” I think Mel Brooks helped make those words famous. Or maybe it was the person, who typed them up on small pieces of white paper, and stuck them into fortune cookies. Either way the idiom often becomes my mantra when traveling with children. I just survived a 10,000-mile journey to and from Hawaii with my young daughter, and yes, I hoped for the best, but expected the worst. Shockingly, things went fairly smoothly… unlike past trips. Despite two delayed flights and a few shoulder blows courtesy of the guy sitting behind me, who … Continue reading

Save on a Winter Ski Vacation

I much prefer sunbathing on a tropical island than skiing down an icy slope. However, the deals being offered by ski resorts across the nation right now are so incredible, they actually made me reconsider my upcoming Hawaiian vacation… for like 30 seconds. If you are aching to feel the rush of flying down the face of a mountain at highway speeds, without having to drain your wallet, then you might consider the following fabulous winter ski deals: COLORADO If you are a serious skier, then you can save big by purchasing Vail Resorts’ $599 Epic Pass. The deal offers … Continue reading

Family Fun in Mississippi

Forget about Manhattan, the Muppets are taking on Mississippi, and they want you to come along for the ride. “Jim Henson’s Fantastic World,” a new interactive exhibit at the Mississippi Museum of Art, offers fun for the entire family. It doesn’t matter if you’re not a die-hard fan of the quirky, hairy puppets, which used to have their own television show. One stroll through the “Fantastic World” and you’ll be mesmerized by the magic Jim Henson has created. In addition to the weird-looking, fanged puppets, which performed skits on “The Muppet Show,” the exhibit also features more familiar characters, such … Continue reading
